A new traffic regime will change the way people visit

A new traffic regime with a barrier system has come into force at the Vršič Pass. For now, however, it does not bring major changes, as parking at the top of the pass is not possible this year due to unfinished parking areas. Traffic flow will be ensured by traffic wardens and free buses.

The barrier below the pass has been operating since today. Unlimited and free passage over the pass will be allowed. Parking will be permitted in designated parking areas below the pass, for example, near the Russian Chapel or Erjavčeva koča. The second barrier below the pass, which is intended to regulate parking on the pass in the future, will remain closed this year because the contractor failed to complete the parking areas at the top of Vršič, explained the mayor of Kranjska Gora, Henrika Zupan.
 
She said that traffic wardens will continue to manage traffic flow on Vršič this year, as they have done since 2023, with the costs shared by the municipalities of Kranjska Gora and Bovec. At the barrier in the valley, information staff will explain how the system works. “We are also appealing to the inter-municipal traffic warden service and the police to take action against incorrectly parked vehicles,” said the mayor.
 
“Although only half of the system has been completed, we still believe it is right to put it in place. In this way, traffic will nevertheless be calmed, the system will gradually become established, and people will get used to it,” the mayor assessed. Although the municipality is somewhat disappointed, they understand that the parking areas at the top of Vršič have not yet been arranged because the winter season on Vršič extended into spring and because, due to improper parking at the construction site, the contractor was unable to work.
 
In May, there was considerable congestion on Vršič due to the holidays of Austrian and German visitors. “It is completely incomprehensible to me that people do not respect traffic signs and leave their vehicles in places where it is clearly marked that there is a construction site,” the mayor pointed out.

Free bus line between Kranjska Gora and Bovec

She hopes that the situation will improve with the introduction of free public bus transport across the pass, which is financed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and began operating at the beginning of this month. “We urge people to use the bus. In this way, together we will ensure traffic flow and also protect nature in the Vršič area,” emphasised Robert Klinar, director of the Kranjska Gora municipal administration.
 
“We do not believe that the new traffic regime over the Vršič Pass will discourage people from visiting, but rather that it will change the way they visit, encouraging them to use more sustainable forms of mobility. We encourage them to leave their cars in the valley and travel to the sights by bus,” said Katja Hartman from the Kranjska Gora Tourism public institute.

During the summer season, buses will run every day

Bus services from both the Kranjska Gora and Bovec sides began on the first weekend in June. Until 24 June, they will be available only on weekends; from then until the end of September, they will run every day. They will be most frequent at the peak of the season, when there will be almost 20 services per day. In addition, the timetable has been prepared to serve as access for mountain and alpine ascents and tours, as the first buses from Bovec and Kranjska Gora depart at 4:30 a.m., while the last depart at 9:30 p.m.
 
Bus services to the Vrata Valley, provided by the Municipality of Kranjska Gora in recent years, have already proven very popular. At certain times, they are quite heavily used, so this year a reservation system has been introduced for buses to the Vrata Valley and for the electric vans that run to the Peričnik Waterfall.
 
As Hartman explained, half of the seats on the aforementioned buses and vans to the Vrata Valley can be reserved in advance. “The reservation is paid, as we want to avoid situations where someone makes a reservation and then does not show up. In this way, we also want to reduce user dissatisfaction,” she said.
