The parking availability signs in the valley DO NOT include the parking spaces at Erjavčeva Koča. They also DO NOT include the free parking spaces reserved for our guests.
Our guests can always park in the parking area in front of the lodge and, provided it is not occupied, in the free parking area behind the lodge.

The Slovenian Infrastructure Agency, together with the municipalities of Kranjska Gora and Bovec, is introducing a new traffic management system at Vršič Pass. As of today, new parking spaces at the top of the pass are available to visitors, following the reconstruction of the Vršič road.
 
Parking at the top of Slovenia’s highest road pass has not been possible during this year’s summer season, as construction work on the road reconstruction and parking facilities, which was originally scheduled to be completed in spring, was delayed. Although parking at the top of the pass was not permitted, many visitors disregarded the restriction, so traffic wardens, municipal officers, and the police had to help maintain order.
 
Following the completion of the asphalt works last Monday, the newly arranged parking areas at the pass will be available to visitors as of today, the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency announced. At the top of the pass, there are 80 parking spaces for passenger vehicles, three spaces for people with disabilities, 24 spaces for motorcycles, two spaces for buses, and eight short-term parking spaces for passenger vehicles for up to 15 minutes. Parking will be free of charge until the end of the year.
 
In accordance with nature conservation requirements, the number of parking spaces has been reduced by two-thirds compared with the period before the reconstruction. It is already clear that there will not be enough spaces for all visitors wishing to stop at the pass.
 
Traffic signs before the barriers on both the Kranjska Gora and Trenta sides will display parking availability to drivers. This is intended to allow drivers to choose the appropriate lane in advance. The occupancy information refers exclusively to the public parking spaces at the top of the pass and does not include parking areas at privately operated mountain huts.

Before the barriers, the road widens into two traffic lanes. The right-hand lane is intended for visitors wishing to park at the top of the pass. At the barrier, drivers will collect a parking ticket, and entry will only be permitted while parking spaces are available.
 
The left-hand lane is intended for all other road users who wish to continue across the pass or proceed to other designated parking areas and destinations along the Vršič road.
 
The barriers are located on the Kranjska Gora side, beyond Lake Jasna, and on the Trenta side, before the turn-off to the source of the Soča River.
“Before the barriers on both sides of the pass, turning areas have been provided to allow drivers to safely change direction when the parking areas at the top are fully occupied or when a longer queue forms in the right-hand lane,” the Infrastructure Agency explained.
 
If the parking queue reaches the point where the right-hand lane separates from the main traffic lane, additional vehicles will not be allowed to stop in the left-hand transit lane. In this situation, drivers can use the turning area or continue across the pass, without the option to park at the top.
 
At weekends, traffic wardens will be present around the barriers and at the top of the pass. They will help drivers use the new system and manage traffic.
According to the Infrastructure Agency, the objectives of the new traffic management system are to ensure a safer and more orderly visit to the area, improve traffic flow, and better protect the sensitive natural environment, particularly during the tourist season.
 
The barrier system was introduced on a limited basis as early as 15 June, but at that time it did not allow parking at the top of the pass. The parking barrier remained closed, while the transit barrier, as it will under the new system, allowed unlimited and free passage across the pass. Parking was permitted in designated parking areas below the pass.
 
Some questions and uncertainties remain about how the system will operate. For example, the system will only display the availability of parking spaces at the top of the pass, meaning that visitors will not know whether parking spaces may be available at the mountain huts. Some of these issues will therefore still need to be resolved, Aleš Zdešar, Head of the Spatial Planning Department at the Triglav National Park public institution, said.
 
“We already know that the system will not be optimal or ideal, but we should not give up – Vršič urgently needs such a system,” Zdešar stressed.
As he pointed out, vehicles simply cannot be left parked in a two-kilometre-long queue along the road. This leads to chaos, which not only causes traffic congestion but can also contribute to a serious traffic accident.
