Plan and inform

Always tell someone about your route and the estimated time of return.

Enter your name in summit books and sign in books at huts. This could be very helpful to mountain rescue teams during a search mission.

Early and thorough planning is the key to safety in the mountains. While spontaneous decisions can be exciting, they are strongly discouraged in this context. Take the time to prepare and feel in control of your adventure.

  • Check the weather forecast (ARSO).
  • Book your stay at the mountain huts.
  • Get a hiking map and carefully plan your route.
  • Mobile navigation apps can be helpful. The local map app includes hiking maps.

Start your hike early in the day. This is because thunderstorms are more likely to occur in the afternoons, and mountain huts are the only safe places from lightning. By getting an early start, you can reduce the risk of being caught in a dangerous situation.Mountain huts are a convenient stop for food and drinks, lightening your backpack and making your outing more enjoyable. Knowing these resources are available can bring a sense of comfort and ease to your journey.

Respect the mountain environment by keeping your garbage in your backpack, taking it down to the valley, and sorting it in separate containers. This responsible approach will make you feel more connected to the natural beauty around you.

Bivouac huts are to be used in cases of emergency and not as tourism facilities.

Equipment and Safety tips

Sturdy hiking boots, particularly high-cut or mid-cut ones, are not just a recommendation but a crucial element for ankle protection. Wearing sandals, sneakers, or other lightweight footwear is not recommended as it can lead to accidents. By choosing the right footwear, you can feel secure and prepared for your outdoor adventure.

Did you know slipping (caused by inappropriate footwear, inexperience, or tiredness) is the number one cause of mountain accidents?

Whatever your chosen activity (hiking, running, cycling…), always carry a backpack with the following items:

  • first aid kit,
  • headlamp and spare batteries,
  • emergency foil blanket and bivy sack (for thermal protection in case of an accident or unplanned bivouac),
  • fully-charged cell phone (turn off mobile data to save battery power),
  • hiking maps and compass,
  • high-energy food which is light, long-lasting and doesn’t take up much space (energy bars, nuts, etc.),
  • sufficient quantity of liquid (non-alcoholic isotonic beverages).

Remember to always wear clothes that protect against the sun, wind, and cold (warm clothes, a hat, and gloves). By being cautious and prepared, you can enjoy your outdoor activities without any worries.

It’s not unusual to encounter extreme cold and snow at the height of the summer.

Know how to use your equipment!

Wearing a helmet is highly recommended, especially for activities like cycling and climbing, as it can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in case of a fall or collision.

In case of an accident

The Slovenian Mountain Rescue Service is responsible for search and rescue missions in the Slovenian mountains.

In case of an accident, call 112 or send an SMS with the following details:

YOUR NAME,

details of the accident

WHAT, WHERE, AND WHEN,

HOW MANY are injured, and the extent of their injuries,

THE KIND OF HELP you need.

IMPORTANT:

Remember, keeping calm and maintaining a clear head is crucial. Ensure that the entire group remains composed.

Evaluate the situation and protect YOURSELF and INJURED from additional hazards.

Perform first aid to the best of your ability.

Use the international air rescue signal only if no rescuers are at the site.

Keep in mind that it may take several hours for help to arrive. Sometimes, a helicopter can’t fly due to heavy winds, bad weather, fog, etc. and mountain rescue teams have to get to the accident site on foot carrying all of their heavy gear. Regularly practising your first aid skills and always carrying the required equipment will empower you to handle any situation.

Alcohol and tobacco have no place in the mountains!
