THE BUS Schedule for Vršič Pass 2026 with free buses

On Monday, 1 June 2026, a new bus route will begin operating on the Kranjska Gora – Vršič – Bovec route, significantly improving access to this area for local residents and visitors. The route was established in cooperation with local communities and the Ministry of Infrastructure as a response to changes in the traffic regime on the Vršič Pass, brought about by the introduction of barriers. Rides on the route will be free of charge.

The road to Erjavčeva koča will remain open and accessible throughout the year, and the hut also has a car park located just 50 metres from the building.
The bus stop is located 300 metres from Erjavčeva koča.

Take a BUS to Vršič Pass

The new route represents an important step towards sustainable mobility in the Alps and encourages a more environmentally friendly way of visiting one of the busiest mountain passes in Slovenia. The aim of introducing the route is to reduce the traffic burden on the Vršič Pass, improve sustainable mobility in Triglav National Park, and provide better accessibility for locals and tourists.

The introduction of the route brings several important improvements, including less car traffic on Vršič and in the Trenta Valley, greater safety and calmer traffic due to the new barrier system, sustainable access to sensitive natural areas, a better tourist experience without the stress of finding parking, and improved connections between tourist destinations, particularly Kranjska Gora and the Soča Valley. The route is intended for local residents who travel daily between the valleys, mountaineers and hikers who need access to high-mountain trailheads, and tourists and visitors who wish to explore the Julian Alps without a car.

Bus Public Transport to Vršič in the 2025 Season

Connecting destinations and easing traffic

The new route connects key points in the Julian Alps, from Kranjska Gora across Vršič to Trenta, Soča, and Bovec, making it easy to travel without a private car. The route currently includes 14 stops, including important hiking starting points and tourist locations such as Lake Jasna, Mihov dom, Erjavčeva koča, the Source of the Soča River, and the Trenta Valley. Three stops, Soča, Kršovec, and Ruski križ, which are still under construction, will be activated gradually during the summer.

The service is adapted to the season between 1 June and 30 September 2026. In June, until 26 June 2026, it will operate only at weekends. During the main season, from 26 June to 31 August 2026, passengers will have 20 departures per day available, with the first morning departure at 4:30 a.m. and the last departure at 9:30 p.m. In September, the timetable will again be adjusted, with separate weekend and weekday schedules.

Introduction of a new traffic regime on the Vršič Pass in the 2026 tourist season and provision of free public transport

The Ministry of Infrastructure and the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency inform the public that, as of 15 June 2026, a revised traffic regime will come into force in the area of the Vršič Pass. The main goal of the new measures is to calm traffic and protect the sensitive Alpine environment, while a key part of the project is the introduction of public bus transport across the pass, which will be free of charge during the 2026 tourist season.

Gateway to the Julian Alps / The Only Mountain Hut Open Year-Round on Vršič Pass

Below, we present the key information regarding transport operations, parking arrangements, and the functioning of the barrier system during this year’s tourist season.

Free public bus transport to Vršič Pass

In order to reduce the traffic burden on the mountain pass, a free bus route will be organised during the summer season, connecting both sides of the pass.

Operating period: from 1 June to 30 September 2026.
Main season with increased frequency: between 26 June and 31 August 2026.
Starting points and route: buses will operate in both directions from two main starting points, Kranjska Gora and Bovec, providing two-way transport across the Vršič Pass.

Parking situation and the impact of weather conditions on construction works

Users of the area are informed that the parking facilities in the area of the pass will not be fully completed by the beginning of the 2026 summer season.

The delay in the completion of the works was caused by two key factors. Firstly, the long winter season practically transitioned directly into the summer period, preventing the contractor from completing the construction of the parking arrangements within the planned timeframe. Secondly, the continuation of construction works on site is being significantly obstructed and limited by the persistent illegal parking of vehicles in the area of the pass, which is causing additional delays in implementation.

Operation of the barriers and transit traffic regime

The barrier system controlling entry into the restricted traffic area on Vršič will operate according to an adapted protocol in the 2026 season.

Passage through the barrier system into the Vršič road area will be free of charge and not time-limited. The barriers will be used to guide and inform drivers about the established traffic regime and to monitor entries and exits.

The barriers will allow transit traffic and access to the established parking areas within the restricted zone. However, parking at the very top of the Vršič Pass will not yet be available in the 2026 season.

Accordingly, in the barrier area where the road widens into two lanes, the right-hand lane, which is otherwise intended for parking at the pass, will remain permanently closed in 2026.

Appeal to visitors and mountaineers

The Slovenian Infrastructure Agency and the Ministry once again call on all visitors, especially those who wish to use the Vršič Pass as a starting point for mountain trips or short excursions, to act responsibly.

Please leave your vehicles in the valley and travel to the pass by free public scheduled transport. By doing so, you will contribute to the faster completion of construction works, greater traffic safety, and the preservation of the unspoilt nature of Triglav National Park.
