This guide is prepared from the perspective of Erjavčeva koča, a mountain hut on Vršič Pass. Use it together with current weather, road conditions and responsible behaviour in Triglav National Park.
Parking at Erjavčeva Koča and Vršič Pass
Yes, you can park near Erjavčeva mountain hut. There is free parking close to the hut, and the wider area around Vršič Pass has several parking possibilities for visitors, hikers and guests. However, parking in Triglav National Park is regulated, so you should always use marked or designated parking areas only.
Erjavčeva Koča is located on Vršič Pass, at 1,525 metres above sea level, directly by the mountain road between Kranjska Gora and Trenta. This makes it a convenient place to stop, stay overnight, start a hike or take a break while travelling across the pass.
Is There Free Parking Near Erjavčeva Koča?
Yes. There is a free parking area near Erjavčeva mountain hut with space for approximately 50 cars. It is located very close to the hut and is suitable for guests, hikers and visitors who want to explore the Vršič area.
Parking for guests may also be available behind the hut. Please inform the hut staff before driving onto the closed private access road, so they can check whether there is space available for your car. If there is no space behind the hut, you can unload your luggage and park your car in the public parking area nearby.
Parking on Vršič Pass
Parking on Vršič Pass can be busy, especially in summer, on weekends, during holidays and in good weather. The top of Vršič Pass is a popular stop for drivers, hikers, cyclists, motorcyclists and visitors taking photos of the Julian Alps.
If the electronic sign near Kranjska Gora shows that Vršič is “transit only” or occupied, this usually refers to the availability of parking spaces near the top of the pass, not necessarily to the status of Erjavčeva Koča. If you are staying at the hut, it is still best to contact us directly and check parking options before arrival.
Can I Park Overnight?
Guests staying at Erjavčeva Koča can park while they are staying at the hut, according to the available parking space and instructions from the hut staff. However, parking does not mean that camping or sleeping in a vehicle is allowed.
The Triglav National Park Act prohibits parking motor vehicles, caravans and vehicles used for residential purposes outside designated areas. This means you should not sleep in a car, camper van or motorhome on ordinary parking areas. Parking areas are for parking, not for camping or overnight sleeping in vehicles.
Bus Stop Near the Hut
There is also a bus stop about 300 metres from Erjavčeva Koča. The seasonal bus between Kranjska Gora, Vršič and Bovec usually operates only during the high season, so you should always check the current timetable before travelling.
The current public transport timetable is also published on our contact page. In the low season or winter, public transport over Vršič may be limited or unavailable because of snow, road conditions or seasonal timetable changes.
Check Conditions Before Arrival
Before driving to Vršič Pass, check road conditions, weather and visibility. Mountain weather can change quickly, and in winter or early spring the road may be affected by snow, ice or avalanche danger.
You can use our live cameras from Vršič Pass and the page about live road conditions at Vršič Pass to better understand the current situation before you arrive.
Best Parking Advice for Visitors
If you are visiting for a short stop, use the public parking area near the hut or other marked parking spaces on Vršič Pass. If you are staying overnight at Erjavčeva Koča, contact the hut staff about guest parking before driving behind the hut.
If you are planning a hike, arrive early and use marked parking only. Popular routes from the area include several hiking trails around Vršič Pass, so parking can fill quickly in good weather.
For a full visit, it is often easier to stay directly at the hut. This gives you better parking logistics, an early start for hikes and more flexibility if the weather or traffic changes.
