Safe in the mountains in summer as well

Mountain rescuers responded to 660 incidents last year, approaching the record set in 2023, when 687 interventions were recorded. This year, the number of accidents is increasing, as they have already carried out 220 interventions, compared with 190 in the same period last year.

Ahead of the start of the season, the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia warned about the dangers in the mountains. Last year, they recorded a tragic record: 50 fatalities in the mountains and in difficult-to-access terrain.

“Slipping and unfamiliarity with the terrain are still the leading causes of accidents. They are followed by poor physical fitness and inadequate equipment, factors that individuals can influence through appropriate prevention,” said Gregor Dolinar, president of the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia, at the presentation of the season.

What to pay attention to

He reminds all hikers of the importance of proper preparation, choosing a suitable route, having appropriate equipment and footwear, checking the weather, and doing something many people forget: informing family or friends about the planned route and making sure their mobile phone battery is fully charged. For orientation, an up-to-date hiking map should still be used. One of the basic rules is also to go into the mountains in company, at least in pairs.

“Awareness among Slovenian mountain visitors is improving. However, it is difficult to reach foreign hikers, which is why this year we have already prepared a webinar for tourism workers, so that they can warn their guests about the dangers. It is also important that hikers say where they are going and sign mountain hut logbooks, because without this information, they are difficult to find,” Dolinar added.

According to him, almost half of rescue operations involve foreign visitors to the mountains.

Animals also need to be rescued

Žan Karničar from Jezersko, vice-president of the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia, drew attention this year to the issue of animal rescue. “Over the past five years, we have responded to 45 incidents involving animals. In these cases as well, the most common causes are slips and falls, and animals can also become trapped on steep slopes. In such situations, the owner is also at risk of injury,” he said, adding that there are many dangers, including dehydration and bites or stings from snakes and insects.

He particularly warns dog owners to keep their animals under active supervision and to use suitable harnesses and muzzles, which can greatly facilitate rescue operations. “In the event of an accident, even an otherwise calm dog may feel threatened,” said Karničar, who is a veterinarian by profession. He admitted that rescuing grazing animals can be somewhat more demanding. Animal owners should also pay special attention to food and, above all, fresh water for their animals, as mountain springs can dry up in summer. For rescuers, and ultimately for all mountain visitors, it can also be extremely important for dogs to have the owner’s name and phone number on their collar, as this can quickly help resolve a problem.

A bivouac shelter is not tourist accommodation

On this occasion, the association also drew attention to the 17 bivouac shelters available to mountaineers as emergency shelters. “These are facilities that are permanently open, but they are not tourist accommodation,” Karničar continued. He recalled the bivouac below Skuta, where Kamnik mountain rescuers have carried out 37 interventions over the past five years. It could be understood between the lines that some people deliberately use it for overnight stays, even though the route to this bivouac is much easier than the descent that follows through difficult-to-access terrain.

Mountain rescuers continue to be actively supported by the Slovenian Armed Forces’ and the police’s helicopter units, which provide additional on-duty teams during holidays and at weekends. “Mountain tourism is still growing, but unfortunately, many people ignore the warnings of the police and mountain guides,” said Matej Brajnik from the Mountain Unit of the Slovenian Police, citing this as one of the reasons for accidents and describing it as an underestimating attitude.

The debate on whether rescue operations should be charged

This is also one of the reasons why Slovenia has long been debating whether rescue interventions should be paid for. Opinions among rescuers are divided: there is a distinction between negligence and underestimating risks on the one hand, and accidents or medical conditions that can happen just as easily in the valley on the other. There is also a prevailing concern that people in distress might decide not to call for help.

“This falls within the domain of the state. With our expertise, we can help shape the content. The fact is that the financial burden is on the state budget, to which foreigners contribute nothing,” Dolinar added.
