We can read about the history of the mountain huts as long as the Erjavec lodge was built on a Vršič pass near Kranjska Gora in 1901. At first, they said that building a road to the mountain pass was impossible. After the road was built, all mountaineers and other nature lovers enjoyed the shelter that later became a mountain hut. In those days, more and more people visited the mountains, especially after the Corona years, and the shelter and mountain hut era slowly faded into history.

Suppose sometimes it was enough to have a winter room, practically without any heating, and it was acceptable to sleep in the same room with icicles. In that case, these times are almost impossible for younger people to imagine.
After renovating the lodges around the Slovenian mountains and abroad, with “modern” rooms with heating and even hot water in the mountain huts, cabins, or lodges, sharing beds with others was not even a question. Sharing rooms, also known as dormitories, was practically the only option you could pick, and nobody complained. No earlier than in the year 2023, we replaced room doors with holes in the middle of the doors, let’s say a window, and it was used to hut caretakers to see if all the guests were in the room or not and if all of them are the guests who have paid for staying in the house for the night.

Those mountain huts, cabins, or lodges were not built to become hostels or hotels, especially not the ones higher in the mountains and not accessible by road. Small and straightforward rooms have stayed the same since they were built. There are four walls with some beds, a small chair that can be used as a night table, heating, some pictures on the wall and a fantastic view outside the window. We like to say, “Simplicity inside—luxury outside.“
In Erjavčeva mountain hut, we have 11 private rooms on the first floor and a floor higher, and two bigger rooms with mixed beds or a so-called mixed dormitory.
Rooms one, four, nine and room called GRS have four beds. Room number two is the biggest private room with five beds, and room three is the only double bedroom. Rooms five, six and eight are the rooms with three beds. Rooms seven and ten are the smallest rooms with one bed.
If you reserve your stay in one of those rooms, you will be alone, whether the beds or two remain empty.
On the dormitory floor, however, you will sleep, like everywhere else, in a shared room with other people. This situation makes people unfamiliar with mountain huts and their differences similar to hostels.
