A stay in a mountain hut with children can be a wonderful family experience. In Slovenia, mountain huts are increasingly adapting their facilities and services to make visits more comfortable for families with young children.
Family-friendly mountain huts often provide:
– children’s meal portions,
– indoor play corners with toys,
– outdoor playgrounds,
– child-friendly equipment such as high chairs, bed guards, stools, and other practical essentials.
More than a quarter of Slovenian mountain huts have received the Family-Friendly Mountain Hut certificate. In these huts, the staff make a continuous effort to ensure that the stay is pleasant, safe, and memorable for both young hikers and their parents.
These huts are usually accessible by well-maintained mountain trails, and many are located near natural attractions that children can also enjoy. If you are looking for family-friendly accommodation in a mountain hut at Vršič Pass near Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, choosing a hut that welcomes families can make your mountain visit even more enjoyable.
Respect Nature and Fellow Hikers in the Mountains
When visiting the mountains, it is important to respect both the natural environment and other hikers. Please take your rubbish back to the valley, use water and other resources sparingly, and help preserve the fragile alpine world for future visitors.
Quiet time in most mountain huts is usually observed between 22:00 and 6:00. At Erjavčeva mountain hut, quiet time is from 22:00 to 7:00, allowing guests to rest and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the mountains.
Dogs are welcome at many mountain huts, although they are often not allowed inside. At Erjavčeva mountain hut, however, we are proudly pet friendly. Pets are welcome in the hut, in the restaurant, and in private rooms, with no extra charge.
Mountain huts can be reached by following marked hiking trails, and many huts work hard to reduce their environmental impact. The Environment-Friendly Mountain Hut certificate has already been awarded to one sixth of mountain huts in Slovenia, reflecting the growing commitment to sustainable mountain tourism.
Tradition, Heritage, and Mountain Hut Atmosphere
The first mountain huts in Slovenia were built more than 130 years ago. Erjavčeva mountain hut, built in 1901, was the first mountain hut at Vršič Pass. Although many huts have been renovated over time, they still reflect a deep respect for the tradition, heritage, and spirit of the period in which they were originally built.
Most mountain huts still feature a wood-burning stove or fireplace, creating a feeling of warmth and cosiness while also providing a practical place to dry wet clothes after a day in the mountains.
Every mountain hut tells its own story. Its history can often be felt in the furniture, interior details, and facilities. A conversation with the hut manager may reveal some of the most interesting stories, traditions, and hidden features of both the hut and its surroundings.

Welcome to Erjavčeva Mountain Hut
The traditional rules of mountain huts are long established, but some of them no longer reflect the way people travel today. At Erjavčeva mountain hut, we have thoughtfully adapted certain rules to better match modern expectations while still respecting the spirit of mountain life.
During the warmer months, when the road to Vršič Pass is free of snow and guests can reach Erjavčeva mountain hut by car, the hut feels more like a guesthouse with private rooms and beds than a traditional high-mountain refuge. However, when winter closes the road and the hut can only be reached on foot, it once again becomes a true mountain hut in the full alpine sense of the word.

A mountain hut is often associated with well-earned rest during a hike, a mountaineering tour, or a day spent in the peaceful natural surroundings of the mountains. Mountain huts are welcome stopping points on the way to nearby mountain peaks, safe shelters during bad weather, and popular destinations for hikers, climbers, and all lovers of the alpine world. Under the umbrella of the Alpine Association of Slovenia, there are 164 mountain huts and 15 bivouacs across Slovenia, spread throughout the country with the exception of Prekmurje.
Mountain huts also serve as checkpoints along many long-distance trails, including the Slovenian Mountain Hiking Trail, which connects 56 huts, and the Slovenian Mountain Bike Route, which includes 54 huts.
Huts in the high mountains are generally open during the summer season, while many others operate throughout the year, some every day and some only on weekends. Erjavčeva mountain hut is open almost all year round, except in November. In addition to accommodation, mountain huts are also valuable information points where guests can learn more about marked trails, current trail conditions, nearby peaks, weather forecasts, and local traditions.

Cuisine and Traditional Mountain Hut Food
Mountain huts usually work with limited energy and water resources and depend on simpler logistics, which is why they traditionally offer a classic, well-tested, and hearty selection of mountaineer dishes. Huts that can be reached by road often provide a wider choice of meals. Whether you are an omnivore or a vegetarian, you can eat well in Slovenian mountain huts and enjoy traditional homemade food.
Popular mountain hut dishes include jota (sauerkraut stew) with meat, ričet (barley porridge with beans) with meat, goulash, various casseroles, sausages, ajdovi žganci (crumbled buckwheat porridge), as well as pasta, soups, bograč, gnocchi, and dumplings.
Guests with a sweet tooth can enjoy a variety of strudels, pies, flancati (fried dough pastries), and other hut-specific homemade desserts.
Overnight Stays in a Mountain Hut
Few experiences compare to waking up to beautiful mountain views and breathing in the fresh alpine air. In mountain huts, guests can usually stay either in smaller private rooms with at least two beds or, as a more affordable option, in shared dormitories with more than 12 beds in one room.
At Erjavčeva mountain hut, we offer 11 private rooms as well as one floor with dormitory beds. If you reserve a private room with, for example, four beds and there are only three of you, the fourth bed remains empty.
The price of an overnight stay depends on the number of beds in the room. In general, more beds in a room mean a lower price per bed. Special accommodation rates are available to members of the Alpine Association of Slovenia and other organizations that have a reciprocity agreement with it.
If you wish to use a mountaineering discount at Erjavčeva mountain hut, you must present a valid mountaineering membership card from your country of residence. The card must be valid for the current year. Slovenian mountaineering membership cards cannot be used by citizens of other countries.
For overnight stays in high mountain huts during the summer season, it is recommended to book your bed in advance.
Your booking is held until 17:00 on the day of arrival.
Check-in at Erjavčeva mountain hut is between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
We recommend that guests use their own personal bedding items where appropriate.
All beds at Erjavčeva mountain hut are prepared for sleeping. Sleeping bags are not allowed because of dust mites and the risk of bed bugs.
