President Tito at the Hut on Vršič (1954)

(p. 361)
In mid-May, the Poštar Hut on Vršič received an exceptionally distinguished visitor. It was visited by the President of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, Comrade Tito, accompanied by the Vice-President of the Executive Council of the People’s Republic of Slovenia, Comrade Maček, and he stayed there for two days. Comrade Tito was welcomed by the president, the manager of the PTT Mountaineering Society, and the hut keeper, who wished him a pleasant rest in the hut and in our mountains.

President Tito at the Hut on Vršič (1954)

For more than three hours, Comrade Tito remained in friendly conversation with our mountaineers, awaiting the time when it would be necessary to head out, even in the dark of night, to lie in wait for the black grouse. He enthusiastically recounted his hunting successes and trophies taken in various places. It soon became clear that Comrade Tito was an excellent hunter and marksman, as he struck every piece of game—even at great distances—with a single shot. He spoke of an ibex with exceptional horns, of a wild boar weighing over 300 kilograms with magnificent tusks, of black grouse, of a she-wolf, and also of two bears that live in an enclosed area in his garden and to whom he gladly brings sugar.
Most of us postal workers are not hunters, so it was not surprising that Comrade Mrak wished him good luck on the hunt—thereby committing a faux pas against hunting etiquette, since one should never wish a hunter good luck. Comrade Tito went hunting and waited for the first light of dawn. But look at that—bad luck! The black grouse would not sing, and it was impossible to approach it. When he returned, Comrade Tito joked that the blame lay with the postal worker who had wished him good luck. Nevertheless, he remained in high spirits and, at noon, invited us to take photographs with him. He photographed us, after which Comrade Maček took a photograph of him among us.
He waited again the next morning. A heavy downpour at midnight cleared the air, and Comrade Tito once more went after the black grouse. This time, no one wished him good luck, and so he bagged a fine old black grouse, and, for good measure, also a capercaillie.

Comrade Tito felt very comfortable in our hut. He signed the guestbook under number 152 and wrote a complimentary dedication in the memorial book. He also reviewed the photo album, which vividly depicts the construction of our lodge from its inception to the founding of the PTT Mountaineering Society in Ljubljana. He was satisfied with the service, which was, according to his wishes, thoroughly mountaineering in character, and the bunk beds did not bother him either; he remarked that they were soft and that one sleeps sweetly on them. The temporary hut keeper, the friendly Ančka, attended to him impeccably and without the slightest embarrassment throughout his stay, chatting with him in a completely natural, homely manner. That is why he positioned himself next to her for the photograph, and at parting, he gave her a firm handshake.
As a keepsake, we gave him postcards and, the following day, an artistically enlarged photograph of the Poštar Hut with Mojstrovka in the background, to remind him of his stay there. With the visit of such a distinguished guest, we, the postal-worker mountaineers, and the hut on Vršič received special recognition, one we know how to appreciate. The quiet mountain atmosphere in one of the most beautiful alpine corners pleased him greatly, and he therefore promised to visit Vršič and our hut again. We wished Comrade Tito good health—and we will never again wish him good luck on the hunt.
