Dog-Friendly Stay at Erjavčeva Mountain Hut on the Vršič Pass
Erjavčeva mountain hut is one of the best-known mountain huts on the Vršič Pass, and many visitors arrive with dogs when exploring the Julian Alps. Just below the hut stands a small historic outbuilding that has gradually been transformed into a dedicated space for four-legged guests, adding to the dog-friendly character of Erjavčeva koča.
The building has a long history. It was once one of several auxiliary structures on the meadow below the hut, originally used by local pastoral communities. The best-preserved section closest to the hut later served as simple shared accommodation, while other parts had different traditional functions. After the renovation of Erjavčeva mountain hut, the old building was no longer needed for its original purpose and slowly began to deteriorate.
Because many hikers and mountaineers visit Erjavčeva koča with dogs, the idea emerged to restore the lower outbuilding and turn it into a practical dog house. This would provide shelter for dogs during overnight stays, training courses, and longer visits, while also helping hut staff manage pet-friendly accommodation more comfortably and responsibly.
The project began with basic repairs, electricity installation, and improvement of the surrounding area. Later, however, the building was damaged during heavy snowfall when a snowplough struck part of the structure. Even so, the idea was not abandoned. With support from PD Jesenice, and with major help from dedicated members of the GRZS Avalanche Rescue Commission, the building was gradually restored.
A great deal of volunteer work was needed to repair the roof, improve the structure, and put the interior back into usable condition. Bureaucratic procedures took time, but the renovation continued step by step. Today, the dog house represents another practical improvement for visitors looking for a dog-friendly mountain hut in Slovenia.
Although some finishing work around the building and in the interior still remains, the restored space is already largely prepared for future use. For guests planning to visit the Vršič Pass with a dog, this is another reason why Erjavčeva mountain hut is a welcoming base in the heart of Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps.
