Renovation Works on the Vršič Road in 2025

Parking Fee at the Summit Still Undecided

The road across Vršič, which had primarily been closed on weekdays since last year due to renovations, will reopen on Saturday. Renovation work will continue in the autumn of 2025 when a new barrier system will be tested. This system is scheduled to come into effect from June 15 2026, during the summer months.

By Saturday, June 14 2025, the majority of the road on the Primorska side from Trenta will be resurfaced with coarse asphalt, while on the Kranjska Gora side of Vršič, the road renovation will continue in the autumn. In the second half of September, according to Jernej Pavlič, the State Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure, the barrier system will be tested for two weeks and will officially come into effect from June 15 next year.

“There will be two lanes on both sides. The first will be for those who wish to park at the summit; they will receive a parking ticket that must be displayed on the windshield. The second lane will be for transit traffic and visitors to mountain huts and the mountains. Since we received approval for only 92 parking spots, not everyone will be able to park at the top,” explained Pavlič. He added that the new traffic arrangement, designed to improve traffic flow and visitor experience, would be in effect only during the three busiest summer months — from June 15, 2025, to September 15 2025. In other months, the barriers will remain raised.

The parking fee at the summit has not yet been agreed upon, but next summer, a free shuttle bus will operate continuously from both sides for 12 hours a day.
The resurfacing will cost just over two million euros while arranging the summit parking area will cost over one million euros. The barriers themselves will cost around 150,000 euros. These figures provide a clear picture of the financial investment in the Vršič road project.
Locals have been actively involved in proposing solutions to improve traffic flow on Vršič, ensuring quicker commutes and avoiding summer chaos. Among other things, they suggested speed cameras and a vignette for Triglav National Park, as well as restrictions on the use of older, more polluting motorcycles. Above all, they emphasized that the issue is not just with Vršič but with the entire Trenta valley, and they hope this is just the first step toward broader regulation.
