Šitna Glava

Šitna Glava is a lesser-known mountain near the popular Mala Mojstrovka. From its grass-covered summit, there is a beautiful view of Malo Mojstrovka, Slemenova Špica, the Ponce Range, the Robičje Ridge, and the peaks above the Krnica Valley, where Špik, Škrlatica, and Prisank stand out.

About the Hike to Šitna Glava

Šitna Glava is one of the easiest and most rewarding shorter hikes near the Vršič Pass. Because of its gentle grassy summit, beautiful views, and relatively short approach, it is a popular choice for visitors looking for an easier mountain walk in the Julian Alps.

Starting from the parking area at Vršič, follow the marked trail towards Mojstrovka and Sleme. After a short ascent, you will reach a large rock with mountain signs. The left path leads towards Mojstrovka, while the right path leads to Mojstrovka via Hanz’s Route. Continue left. The trail first passes through sparse pine forest and then reaches the scree slopes below Mojstrovka.

As you approach the wall below Mojstrovka, you will notice an unmarked turning. From there, continue sharply to the right. The route beyond this point is no longer marked. A narrow and occasionally less visible path leads through the valley between Mojstrovka and Šitna Glava. The final part of the ascent crosses a rockier section before reaching the scenic grassy summit.

The hike to Šitna Glava is considered relatively easy and does not require major physical effort compared with many other peaks above the Vršič Pass. For this reason, it is often chosen for independent walks, family outings, and as a good first two-thousander for children who are already used to walking in the mountains. Even so, proper footwear, good weather, and normal mountain caution remain essential.
