So real, although made of stone!
One of the most beautiful works of art formed by nature can be found along the way to Vršič. The stone face of the Heathen Maiden in the northern face of Prisank can be best seen from the Erjavčeva koča (Erjavec mountain cabin).

The stone face of the Heathen Maiden
History
High in the steep rock walls of Prisank above the Vršič Pass, the stone face of the Heathen Maiden (Ajdovska deklica) looks down towards the Trenta Valley. When autumn dries the sunny alpine meadows and the mountain slopes turn pale and barren, the wild goats descend towards the valleys and the shelter of the dark forests. Morning mists rise from below, curl across the cliffs, and veil the face of the Heathen Maiden from curious human eyes.
Only a few visitors know the old legend of how she lost her way among the steep rocks and overhanging walls of Prisank and was turned into stone.
According to tradition, the Heathen Maiden was once kind-hearted and merciful. She guided travellers, shepherds, and merchants safely across snow-covered mountain passes. It is said that she lived in a hidden niche beneath the overhanging rocks of Prisank. Whenever someone wandered from the right path, she would leave her shelter and hurry along the winding trails of the Vršič Pass, no matter how severe the weather.
One stormy day, dark clouds gathered above Prisank and the bora wind howled across the mountain. Soon, the trails were buried in snow. A herd of chamois rushed down the slopes, and in doing so triggered a great avalanche of powder snow that thundered into the valley below. The merchants travelling towards Trenta and further south barely escaped the white destruction. Had the Heathen Maiden not left her shelter and shown them the safe way through the fresh snow, they would have been lost.
In gratitude, the travellers later brought wine, bread, and meat to the foot of the rock where she lived. These gifts ensured that she would never again suffer from hunger or thirst.
The Heathen Maiden was said not only to guide people, but also to foretell destinies. One night, she appeared beside the cradle of a newborn child in the Trenta Valley and predicted his future:
“When you grow up, you will become a brave hunter, unlike any ever seen beneath Prisank. You will hunt the white chamois with golden horns. You will shoot it, sell the golden horns, and become rich…”
But her sisters overheard the prophecy. Furious, they cursed her and turned her into stone. Since then, the sad face of the Heathen Maiden has remained in the rock wall of Prisank, forever gazing into the Trenta Valley.
Even today, her stone eyes seem wide open in astonishment. If you visit the Vršič Pass, you can still see her lonely stone face resting high on the northern wall of Prisank.
