Questions from Our Guests: Practical Answers Before Staying at Erjavčeva koča mountain hut
Guests often ask the same practical questions before staying at Erjavčeva koča on the Vršič Pass. That is completely understandable. A mountain hut is not a hotel, a city hostel, or a standard guest house. It is a real alpine hut in the Julian Alps, located at 1,525 metres above sea level, inside Triglav National Park. Because of this, daily life in the hut follows a different rhythm: early mornings, shared spaces, mountain weather, simple comfort, responsible behaviour, and respect for nature.
This guide brings together the most common questions from our guests in one place. It explains what to expect before arrival, how to behave in the hut, how reservations work, what is different from valley accommodation, and why some rules exist. If this is your first time sleeping in a Slovenian mountain hut, this page will help you understand the experience before you arrive.
What Kind of Place Is Erjavčeva koča?
Erjavčeva koča is a mountain hut on Vršič Pass, between Kranjska Gora, Trenta, the Soča Valley and the Julian Alps. It is a practical base for hikers, cyclists, road-trippers, photographers, nature lovers and guests who want to stay close to the mountain pass. You can expect food, shelter, simple rooms, dormitory beds, local information and a real mountain-hut atmosphere.
What you should not expect is a luxury hotel, a party hostel, or a valley resort. Mountain huts work differently because water, electricity, heating, waste removal, road access, staff logistics and weather conditions are all more demanding in the mountains. The real value of Erjavčeva koča is not hotel-style luxury, but its location, tradition, views, warmth, food, and direct access to the alpine world.

Reservations, Check-in and Check-out
If you plan to stay overnight, check room or bed availability in advance. This is especially important during the hiking season, weekends, holidays and good-weather periods. Mountain hut accommodation is limited, and confirmed reservations help the hut team organise rooms, beds, meals and arrivals more efficiently.
Check-in for overnight guests is usually possible from 12:00 to 19:00. In exceptional cases, and only by prior arrangement, later check-in may be possible until 21:00. After 21:00, check-in is not possible, and self check-in cannot be guaranteed. Check-out is until 10:00. Late check-out may be charged or refused, depending on availability and the daily situation in the hut.
If your travel plans change, please inform us as early as possible. A mountain hut has limited beds, and late cancellations or no-shows can prevent other hikers from booking a place to sleep. You can read more on our cancellation policy page and our page about private room or dormitory bed reservations.
Rooms, Dormitory Beds and Sleeping Comfort
Erjavčeva koča offers different sleeping options, including private rooms and dormitory beds. Rooms in a mountain hut are simple and practical. They are made for rest after hiking, travelling, cycling, skiing or exploring the Vršič Pass area. Guests should expect clean beds, warmth, shelter, blankets, pillows and a mountain-hut atmosphere rather than hotel-style luxury.
Nights at Vršič Pass can be cold even in summer, because the hut is high in the mountains and weather can change quickly. We do our best to keep the hut warm and comfortable throughout the year. If you feel cold, please tell the hut staff during your stay, not after departure. In most cases, we can provide an extra blanket or pillow.
When guests receive a room key or digital key, a €10 key deposit is required. The deposit is returned when the key is returned. If the key is not returned, the deposit helps cover the cost of replacing or managing the missing key.
If several guests are staying in the same room, additional keys may be provided when needed. Please ask the hut staff during check-in. Mountain hut culture is based on trust, respect and shared spaces, but guests who prefer to lock their room can use the key provided.
Before departure, please return your key to the hut staff. Returning the key helps us prepare the room for the next guests and keeps the check-in process simple for everyone. More details are available on the key deposit page.
Opening Hours, Food and the Rhythm of the Hut
Opening hours depend on the season, weather, road conditions, reservations, visitor numbers, private events and prior arrangements with the hut staff. In summer, the hut is usually open from 07:00 to 22:00. In winter, it is usually open from 08:00 to 20:00. Outside the main season, opening hours may be more flexible, especially on weekends, for overnight guests, larger groups or by prior arrangement.
Breakfast is usually served from 07:00 to 09:00 in summer and from 08:00 to 09:00 in winter. Kitchen and bar hours can vary depending on the season and daily situation. If you are planning to arrive late, organise a group stay, visit outside regular hours or arrange a special event, please contact us in advance.
Water is one of the most important resources in a mountain hut. Erjavčeva koča is not connected to a public water supply system in the same way as buildings in the valley. Water comes from a nearby natural source, and in dry summer periods it can become limited. Because of this, we ask all guests to save water wherever possible.
When using the shower, please use water carefully. Turn the water off while shampooing or soaping, and turn it back on only for rinsing. During busy periods, additional showers in the basement may also be available. If the doors are locked, please ask the hut staff for the PIN code. Towels can be provided for an additional charge if needed.
One of the strongest reasons to visit Vršič Pass in winter is the deep sense...

Wi-Fi, Phone Signal and Electricity
Guest Wi-Fi is available at Erjavčeva koča, but internet access in a mountain hut is different from internet access in a hotel, apartment, office or town. The hut is located high on Vršič Pass, surrounded by mountains, forest, rock walls, snow and fast-changing weather. Even with upgraded satellite internet, routers and mesh equipment, the connection can sometimes be slower, unstable or temporarily unavailable.
If you need internet for work, online meetings, banking, maps, travel planning or urgent communication, prepare important information before arriving. Download maps, reservation details, road information, weather forecasts and emergency contacts in advance. The mountains are a good place to connect when needed, but also a good place to disconnect from screens.
Electricity should also be used responsibly. Because of the age and construction of the hut, fire safety is important. Cooking in rooms is not allowed. Guests must not use cookers, hot plates, electric kettles, heaters, hair dryers or other high-consumption electrical devices in the sleeping area. Read more about guest Wi-Fi, slow Wi-Fi and no phone signal, and electricity.
Quiet Hours, Smoking, Footwear and Shared Spaces
Many guests wake up early for hiking, travelling, cycling, skiing or continuing their route through the Julian Alps. Please respect quiet hours inside the hut and around the building. Keep noise down in rooms, corridors, stairs, bathrooms and shared areas during the night.
All guests must change into slippers before entering the sleeping area. Hiking shoes, hiking boots, dirty outdoor shoes, ski boots and wet footwear are not allowed in the sleeping area. This protects the floors, keeps rooms cleaner and reduces noise for other guests.
Smoking is not allowed inside the hut, including private rooms, the dormitory floor, toilets, bathrooms, corridors and other indoor guest areas. Smoking is allowed outside in the garden area, where ashtrays are available. Please use them and never throw cigarette butts into nature.
One of the most important traditions among hikers and mountaineers in Slovenia is simple: everything you bring into the mountains, you should also take back down to the valley. This protects Triglav National Park, Vršič Pass, the Julian Alps and the fragile mountain environment around Erjavčeva koča.
Toilet bins are for toilet paper and hygiene paper only. Please do not put personal trash, food packaging, bottles, cans, tissues, wet wipes or other rubbish into the bins in the toilets. If you have rubbish and cannot take it back to the valley yourself, please hand it to the hut staff instead of leaving it in toilets, rooms, the restaurant, the parking area or nature.
Waste separation is very important because waste removal from a remote mountain location is more expensive and more difficult than in the valley. In winter, snow-covered roads can make waste transport even harder. Please help us keep Vršič Pass clean: take your rubbish with you, separate waste correctly, avoid unnecessary packaging and never leave garbage in nature.
Parking is one of the most common practical questions from guests. There is a parking area in front of Erjavčeva koča, close to the Vršič road, but parking at Vršič in front of the hut is paid and is not managed by Erjavčeva koča. The hut does not control parking prices, parking meters, payment systems, barriers, camera control, fines or technical problems with the parking system.
Because Vršič Pass is a very popular destination, parking can be limited during the main season, on weekends, during holidays and in good weather. When possible, check current road conditions, live cameras, weather and transport options before you travel. Do not rely only on Google Maps or road signs, because mountain access information can sometimes be confusing or change quickly.
Erjavčeva koča is located inside Triglav National Park, so visitors should not assume that recreational drone flying is allowed. Drone use in the park is restricted because drones can disturb wildlife, livestock, hut guests, hikers, local people and the peaceful atmosphere of the mountains. Personal photos, social media videos, reels, YouTube clips or casual aerial footage should not be made with a drone without checking the rules and obtaining the required permission in advance.
You do not need a drone to capture beautiful memories at Vršič Pass. The area around Erjavčeva koča already offers scenic viewpoints, mountain landscapes, the Vršič road and views towards the Julian Alps. Use a camera or phone from safe, allowed places and respect other guests, wildlife and the cultural landscape.
Dogs are welcome at Erjavčeva koča, but guests must follow the hut rules and respect other visitors. Dogs are allowed in public areas, the restaurant and private rooms, but they are not allowed on the dormitory floor. Please also note that an additional cleaning or penalty fee may apply if dogs sleep in beds in private rooms.
Travelling with a dog in the mountains requires preparation. Bring water, food, a leash, waste bags, a towel, basic first-aid items and any medication your dog may need. Mountain weather can change quickly, so plan your route and overnight stay carefully. Respect other guests, wildlife, livestock and the natural environment.
Erjavčeva koča is a useful base for day hikes, scenic drives, cycling routes, photography and trips between Kranjska Gora, Trenta and the Soča Valley. Guests often use the hut as a place to rest before or after hiking in the Julian Alps.
Before every hike, prepare properly. Check the weather, road conditions, hiking route, daylight, equipment and your own fitness. Mountain weather can change quickly, and Vršič Pass is a high alpine location. If you are unsure, choose an easier route or ask locally before starting.
Erjavčeva koča is a mountain hut, not a hotel. Please respect quiet hours, shared spaces, water, electricity, heating, nature, staff and other guests. If something is wrong, tell us immediately. If you need something, ask us. Good communication helps everyone have a better stay.
A stay in a mountain hut is simple, practical and authentic. It is about warmth after a day outside, food, rest, mountain views, early starts, shared respect and the special rhythm of alpine life. If you arrive with this understanding, your stay at Erjavčeva koča will be easier, more enjoyable and much closer to the real Slovenian mountain tradition.
