The barriers on the Vršič Road

If you are driving along the road to Vršič to visit one of the mountain huts and the barriers are lowered, please move into the left traffic lane.

The purpose of this system is to improve traffic and parking management in this highly visited tourist area. In recent years, the number of visitors has increased significantly, placing additional environmental pressure on the starting points of the most popular mountain destinations. The Vršič Pass is one of the most heavily used access points, and the introduction of this system represents an important step toward more sustainable traffic management in this part of the Julian Alps.

Operation of the barriers on the Vršič Road

On behalf of the Municipality of Kranjska Gora, Komunala Kranjska Gora d.o.o. will manage the parking areas and the barrier system at the Vršič Pass as part of the management of public parking facilities.

Access to the Vršič Pass area will therefore be controlled by barriers installed at both entry points of the Vršič road. On the Kranjska Gora side, they are located after Lake Jasna, and on the Trenta side, before the junction for the Soča River source.

At these locations, the road widens into two traffic lanes. The left lane is intended for transit across the pass, while the right lane is intended for vehicles that will park at the top of the Vršič Pass, along an approximately 700-meter section of road where parking spaces will be arranged.

You have probably already discovered how useful Slovenia’s highest mountain pass can be. On fine winter days, the slopes above Vršič are certainly not deserted. Even in winter, the ploughed road to the threshold of the high mountains offers opportunities for serious tours that are often almost half as long as they would be if starting from the valley. Nevertheless, avalanche conditions must be monitored carefully, and visitors must be properly equipped and experienced.

Right lane – for vehicles parking at the top of Vršič Pass

Drivers entering the right lane with the intention of parking at the top of the pass must take a parking ticket at the barrier. After arriving at the top of the pass, the ticket must be placed in a visible location inside the vehicle.

When exiting the area, the barrier will open automatically based on license plate recognition. If the system does not recognise the license plate, exit will still be possible by inserting the parking ticket into the parking system’s exit terminal.

Since parking will be free during the testing period, parking meters will not be required.

Left lane – for transit

The left lane is intended for all other road users who do not intend to park at the top of the pass. This includes transit traffic, motorcyclists, cyclists, and visitors who plan to park elsewhere along the Vršič road, for example near mountain huts, the Russian Chapel, or on private land.

Just before Erjavčeva hut, there is also a private parking area that is not included in the quota of parking spaces at Vršič.

At the barrier on the left lane, the system will also recognise the vehicle’s license plate, and the barrier will open automatically. Vehicles whose license plates cannot be read or detected by the system, such as motorcycles, tractors, or sports vehicles, will receive a transit ticket at the barrier.

When leaving the area, the barrier will open automatically for vehicles that entered transit using license plate recognition, provided the plate is successfully detected. For vehicles that entered transit using a ticket, the ticket must be inserted into the exit terminal when leaving the area.

Turnaround area

At the point where the road widens to two lanes, a turnaround area will be provided on the left lane. This will allow drivers who intended to park at the top of the pass to turn around if they discover upon arrival that all parking spaces are already occupied or that a queue has already formed in the right lane.

The turnaround area allows drivers to turn around before entering the barrier-controlled zone and safely return.

It is important to note that if the right lane is occupied up to the point where the road widens, vehicles must not stop in the left transit lane, as this would obstruct traffic flow. In such cases, drivers must either use the turnaround area or continue driving in the left lane. If they continue in the left lane, parking at the top of the pass will no longer be possible.

Assistance and supervision during the testing period

To ensure the proper operation of the system and correct driver behaviour, traffic stewards will be present at both barrier locations and at the top of the pass to provide assistance and monitor the testing period.

In case of problems, a duty phone number is also available: +386 30 995 799.
