The Tour of Slovenia Returns to Vršič After 13 Years

The Tour of Slovenia Returns to Vršič After 13 Years

32nd Tour of Slovenia Presented: For Now, Only Two WorldTour Teams at the Start (Red Bull and Bahrain)

800 kilometres in five days, with 11,000 meters of elevation gain, and above all, the return to Vršič after a long 13 years. A short summary of the 32nd Tour of Slovenia, which returns to Slovenia’s most iconic climb, although the finish of the true queen mountain stage will be in Kranjska Gora.

Stage 1: Velenje–Rogaška Slatina, 141.6 km and 1,600 meters of elevation gain
Stage 2: Radlje ob Dravi–Ormož, 176.8 km and 1,400 meters of elevation gain
Stage 3: Maribor–Celje, 137 km and 2,000 meters of elevation gain
Stage 4: Kranj–Kranjska Gora, 183 km and 4,000 meters of elevation gain
Stage 5: Litija–Novo mesto, 162.1 km and 2,000 meters of elevation gain
Total: 800 km and 11,000 meters of elevation gain.

The tour of Slovenia returned

The Tour of Slovenia returns to its preferred slot, the second half of June, just before the start of the school holidays. The 32nd edition of Slovenia’s most important cycling race will begin on Wednesday, June 17, in Velenje. It will traditionally conclude in Novo mesto on Sunday, June 21.

Return to Slovenia’s Most Famous Climb After 13 Years

“After a long time, a full 13 years, we are returning to Vršič. A long and brutal stage with around four thousand meters of elevation gain,” said technical director Bogdan Fink in his brief description of the decisive fourth stage, which will determine the overall winner.
“Vršič is Slovenia’s cycling mecca. Thirteen years ago, the finish was there, but now the infrastructure no longer allows us to end the stage there because there is too much activity around the area. The descent to Kranjska Gora, however, has been renovated with state support; it is in good condition, and we are convinced that in these circumstances we can descend safely to the stage finish. That is the main reason why Vršič has not been included for 13 years,” Fink explained regarding the return of Vršič.
“The fourth stage is one that gives me great satisfaction and motivation, and we can definitely talk about a battle for the general classification. We all know that one stage is always intended for the best climbers. Vršič is a very beautiful climb, the places are also very beautiful, and I am happy that we will ride such a stage through Slovenia,” said Jakob Omrzel, last year’s best young rider of the Tour of Slovenia, at the press conference.

The 20-year-old has not yet confirmed his participation in the home race, as Bahrain Victorious still has to finalise its lineup, but Fink is convinced that the Novo mesto rider will return for the white jersey with ambitions for the green one.

Amateur Riders Can Race Vršič Too

Rumours of the return to Vršič (1,611 m above sea level) have finally been confirmed after the road to the country’s most famous mountain pass was renovated. The Tour of Slovenia once visited Vršič regularly, almost every year, but the last time the race went there was in 2013. Back then, Vršič was the finish of Stage 3, won by Croatian rider Radoslav Rogina with the help of cycling newcomer Primož Roglič, and Rogina also claimed the overall classification for the then Adria Mobil team.
With the inclusion of Vršič, a long-held wish of cycling enthusiasts has been fulfilled, and, as an added bonus, they are also offered an amateur version of the same route. My Tour of Slovenia offers 500 places to recreational riders who wish to take on the Kranjska Gora–Predel–Trenta–Vršič route, with the finish for amateurs on Vršič itself (87 km and 2,000 meters of elevation gain).

Second Stage Marked by the Drava Cycling Route

The 32nd Tour of Slovenia will start in Velenje for the first time, and the road to Rogaška Slatina will be quite undulating. For the first time, the finish will feature two closing circuits in the spa town, which traditionally hosts stage finishes. Yet last year a breakaway won in Rogaška, something that, in Omrzel’s opinion, could easily happen again this year as he commented on the stage presentation.
Some municipalities had already revealed bits of the stages themselves in recent weeks through posts on their social media accounts. The municipality of Radlje ob Dravi will host the start of Stage 2, which will then connect no fewer than 20 municipalities, with the Drava Cycling Route as its central theme and Ormož as the finish. Although the profile is once again jagged, with a climb through Jerusalem near the end, the national champion believes a sprint finish is likely.
Stage 3 will start in Maribor and finish in Celje, making it the shortest of the five. However, there will be two demanding climbs along the way: the Category 2 ascent to Rogla and the traditional ascent to Celjska koča from Laško. This time, the finish in the princely city will be in the city centre rather than in front of Celje Castle.

“Some ambitious rider could make the race interesting,” Omrzel believes, adding that sprinters stand no chance.
As usual, the Slovenian stage race will end in Novo mesto, where the now customary climb up Trška Gora before the finish will once again be included. It will be the last of five climbs on the day, with a total of 2,000 meters of climbing. Like last year, Stage 5 will start in Litija. Because of the TV broadcast, there will once again be an earlier start, and the finish at Glavni trg will be around 1 p.m.
“I believe it will be raced at full gas and that it will still reshuffle the overall standings, especially because a few more kilometres and some climbing were added,” Omrzel is convinced that nothing will be decided until the finish line.

Only Two WorldTour Teams, Two More Still in Talks

How interesting the race will be, as part of the second tier of world cycling (ProSeries), will depend on the participating teams and the strength of their lineups. From the elite WorldTour, Bahrain Victorious and Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe have so far confirmed the race in their schedules.
“We are still in talks with two more WorldTour teams. But because of injuries and illness, I cannot reveal more yet,” director Fink said about the currently modest elite participation. The International Cycling Union’s requirement for second-tier races is that at least 4 elite teams must compete.
“The UCI has been informed and knows the situation,” said the race director, with only 17 teams currently on the start list.
From the second cycling tier (ProTour), ten teams have Slovenia in their program: the Italian teams Solution Tech NIPPO Rali, Bardiani CSF 7 Saber and Polti VisitMalta; the Spanish teams Burgos Burpellet BH Caja Rural Seguros RGA, Equipo Kern Pharma and Euskaltel Euskadi; MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort from Hungary; and the American teams Modern Adventure and Novo Nordisk.
All three Slovenian continental teams will, of course, take part: Factor Racing from Kranj, Pogi Team Gusto Ljubljana, and Kolesarski klub Novo mesto, which has organised the biggest international race in Slovenia since 1992. In addition, continental teams from Poland (Wibatech Lubelskie Perła Polski) and Hungary (United Shipping) will also compete.

Omrzel, Tratnik, and Lipowitz Also Expected

The main asset of the most Slovenian elite team will likely be Jakob Omrzel, the revelation of last year’s Tour of Slovenia. However, after health issues over the winter, the young rider from Novo mesto has still not been able to definitively confirm his participation.
Jan Tratnik has secured a place in the home race, while Florian Lipowitz said in one of his podcasts back in winter that he would include the Slovenian tour as part of his preparation for the Tour de France. Fink also officially confirmed that Lipowitz will be the Red Bulls’ leader.
