This is probably the oldest photograph we’ll find of VoshütteErjavec Lodge (today Erjavčeva koča), built in 1901.
This photograph is from 1905.

In 1931, Vršič Pass would have been a remote and challenging mountain crossing, traversing through the heart of the Julian Alps. The pass road, constructed during World War I, was a remarkable feat of engineering, winding its way through steep terrain and offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Erjavčeva koča mountain hut, nestled along the pass road, would have been a welcome sight for weary travellers making the arduous journey across the mountains. With its sloping roof and cosy interior, the rustic wooden hut provided shelter, warmth, and sustenance to travellers venturing through the rugged alpine landscape.

On the postcard, the mountain hut would be depicted against a backdrop of towering peaks, with wisps of clouds drifting lazily across the sky. Surrounding the hut, visitors would see patches of colourful alpine flora, including wildflowers and grasses, adding a touch of natural beauty to the scene.

The postcard would capture the timeless allure of Vršič Pass and Erjavčeva koča mountain hut, inviting viewers to imagine themselves embarking on a journey through the pristine wilderness of the Julian Alps. It would evoke a sense of adventure, discovery, and tranquillity, transporting viewers to a bygone era of alpine exploration and mountain hospitality.
