On the 50th anniversary of the Kranjska Gora mountaineering society

(p. 385-386)
Last year, on 19 July 1953, the Kranjska Gora Mountaineering Society celebrated an important and distinguished anniversary—the 50th anniversary of its founding—together with other mountaineering societies of the Upper Sava Valley on Vršič. Unfortunately, the weather was not favourable to the mountaineers that day, and therefore it was not possible to present a more detailed chronicle of our mountaineering history. I believe it is appropriate that we now look back, for fifty years of work are significant not only for the Kranjska Gora society but also for mountaineering in general.

Kranjska Gora mountaineering society

Before the establishment of a mountaineering branch for the Upper Sava Valley, our mountains were ascended by locals—hunters and shepherds. The names of the Trenta men, Jože and Andrej Komac, Tožbar (from Špik), the Kranjska Gora natives Pečar (Bobek) and Janez Kosmač (Rebrenk), as well as Korobidlj from Podkoren, are associated with many ascents.
On 19 July 1903, the founding general assembly of the Slovenian Mountaineering Society’s Kranjska Gora district branch was held in Jesenice. Those present came from Rateče, Kranjska Gora, Mojstrana, Dovje, Hrušica, Jesenice, Planina, and Koroška Bela. A committee was elected, with Milan Guštin, a teacher from Jesenice, serving as president. In addition to the newly elected committee, one delegate was elected for each locality, with the same rights as committee members. For Kranjska Gora, Franc Budinek was elected. At that time, the branch had 106 members. The founders’ main aims were to recruit members, promote local natural beauty, raise funds for building mountain trails, and construct Slovenian mountain huts. The branch committee, which changed only occasionally, worked persistently toward these goals. During this period, membership also increased considerably.
In 1908, the presidency was assumed by the energetic mountaineering worker and Kranjska Gora physician, Dr. Tičar, and, at his initiative, the branch’s seat was transferred that year from Jesenice to Kranjska Gora.
At that time, the branch had no mountain huts of its own in the Kranjska Gora area. There was, however, the Vos Hut on Vršič (today’s Erjavčeva Hut), which was managed by the German Alpine Club. Dr. Tičar, together with active committee members, planned to build the first hut in Krnica. This plan was abandoned because Krnica was exposed to avalanches and because the central committee of the Mountaineering Society was planning to build a hut at Križ. They therefore decided to build a mountain hut on the Trenta side of Vršič, immediately began preparations and construction, and completed it.
The opening of the Slovenian mountain hut on Vršič, named Tičarjev Dom after its then president, took place on 4 August 1912. Around 500 mountaineers attended the opening, a very large number for the time. The late parish priest of Dovje, Jakob Aljaž, celebrated Mass on this occasion and delivered a ceremonial address, followed by other speakers, including Dr. Tičar, Dr. Tominšek, Dr. Pretnar, and others.

The greatest заслuge for the construction of the hut, in addition to Dr. Tičar, belongs to Jakob Cerne, Franc Hafner, Jalen, Petrovčič, and Kozjak. The hut was built largely with funds collected through a fundraising campaign, in which the following distinguished themselves as contributors: Janez Smolej, Šefman, Klander, Žerjav Janez (Anja), Žerjav Gregor (Kravanja)—both then Slovenian mountain guides—as well as many other devoted members and local residents.
Then came the First World War, which did not dissolve the Kranjska Gora branch of the Mountaineering Society but, understandably, halted mountaineering development for five years.
After the First World War, the branch’s activities revived, though its members were deeply affected by the unjust border division of our mountains. The hardest blow, however, was the loss of Tičarjev Dom, which had been built through the efforts and self-sacrifice of the former members. The Italians initially wanted to purchase the hut, but Dr. Tičar strongly opposed the purchase. Dr. Tičar served as president of the Kranjska Gora branch from 1919 to 1921.
It was necessary to think about a new hut. During the First World War, a military hut was erected along the road on Vršič. The then committee of the Mountaineering Society branch purchased it, adapted it, and on 2 July 1922, under the presidency of Vervegar, renamed it Koča na Gozdu (Forest Hut) and put it to its intended use. In 1923, the branch’s president was the notary Grašič. That year, a large raffle was held at this mountain hut, which raised considerable funds.
In 1924, the presidency was taken over by the late Jože Lavtižar. At that time, the Kranjska Gora branch of the Mountaineering Society was dissolved, and independent mountaineering societies were formed. Jože Lavtižar successfully presided over the Kranjska Gora Mountaineering Society for many years. In 1926, a route to the summit of Prisojnik was constructed via the north face, with a branch through the window.

One mountain hut was no longer sufficient. Krnica stood empty. President Lavtižar donated a plot of land in Krnica, where a new hut was built and opened in 1932. This hut serves as a starting point for Kriški Podi, Razor, Škrlatica, Špik, and others, and in spring it is also a popular base for ski touring. During this period, several mountain trails were built and repaired. At that time, alongside Peter Klofutar, who has been an active mountaineer for 43 years, the late Andrej Cerne (Andrejko) and Zore also worked successfully. The Second World War once again interrupted the work of the mountaineering society.
After the war, the authorities provided comprehensive support to our mountaineering society. Under the presidency of the late Franc Pečar, and partly also under Klofutar, the former border guard barracks were purchased and converted into a pleasant mountain shelter, Mihov Dom. The current committee, with president Alojz Robič, provided the huts with electricity, repaired Koča na Gozdu, and partially equipped the annexes at Mihov Dom. Minor repairs were also carried out in Krnica, but much still remains to be done to ensure that mountaineers feel as comfortable there as possible.
The mountaineers of Kranjska Gora look to the future with confidence, even though much work still lies ahead of them.
