Today, we received several calls saying that the Heathen Maiden (Ajdovska deklica) had “collapsed” after part of the rock wall broke away and that she was no longer visible.

After checking the wall ourselves today, we can confirm that this is not true.

The Heathen Maiden is still clearly recognisable and still visible from the terrace of Erjavčeva mountain hut. Her profile is not exactly the same as people may remember from older photographs, but the famous face in the north wall of Prisank / Prisojnik is still there.

For many visitors, this rock face is more than just a geological feature. It is one of the best-known symbols of the Vršič Pass. The Heathen Maiden is traditionally described as a female figure in the north wall of Prisank above the pass, and the Vršič area is still known as a place where visitors can see both the formation itself and the stories connected with it.

The Heathen Maiden Is Still Here

The Heathen Maiden Is Still Here

A Mountain Face, a Mountain Story

The Heathen Maiden is connected with old folk tradition, and there is more than one version of her story.

One of the most widely repeated versions says that a mountain vila or maiden foretold the fate of a newborn boy. When he grew up, he would become a hunter and would one day kill Zlatorog, the legendary white chamois with golden horns. Because she revealed this fate, the other maidens punished her and turned her into stone. This version is often reflected in summaries of the Heathen Maiden legend and in tourism material that links her directly to the Zlatorog tradition.

Another, more pastoral version preserved in folk retellings describes her as a kind guardian of travellers on the Vršič route. In that tradition, she lived beneath the overhanging walls of Prisank and helped merchants and mountaineers find their way through snow and bad weather. After speaking a prophecy that should not have been spoken, her sisters cursed her, and she remained forever in the wall above the pass. This version survives in later retellings of Slovenian folk tradition and is also echoed in secondary references discussing the legend.

Depending on the source or oral tradition, the Heathen Maiden is therefore remembered either:

  • as the prophetess of Zlatorog’s fate, or
  • as a protector of travellers on the Vršič route who was later turned to stone.

Both versions belong to the wider folklore of the Julian Alps, where myths, mountain routes, and natural formations are closely intertwined. The broader Zlatorog tradition has long been part of Slovenian folklore and was first published in the 19th century before spreading into later literary and popular retellings.

Still Visible from Erjavčeva Mountain Hut

That is why today’s rumours matter. People are not only asking whether a piece of rock has fallen away. They are also asking whether one of the best-known stories of the Vršič Pass is still visible in the mountain.

The answer is simple: yes.

The Heathen Maiden is still with us – untuched as before. If you sit on the terrace of Erjavčeva mountain hut, look towards the wall of Prisank, and take a moment, you can still recognise her.

In the mountains, stone is never completely still. Rock walls crack, surfaces weather, and snow and ice reshape details year after year. But for now, the old face above Vršič remains part of the landscape — and part of its story.
