River Soča Valley’s source lies in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at an elevation of 876 metres.
The original fortress was built in 1472 near Bovec on the road between Cave del Predil and Carinthia. Its likely original purpose was a defence of Friuli against the Turks.

Predel Fortress was one of the six fortresses that comprised the system of Carinthian fortresses. It stands at the Predel Pass.
