This guide is prepared from the perspective of Erjavčeva koča, a mountain hut on Vršič Pass. Use it together with current weather, road conditions and responsible behaviour in Triglav National Park.
No, Erjavčeva Koča is not a hostel. We are a mountain hut, also called a mountain lodge or mountain post, located on Vršič Pass in the area of Triglav National Park.
There are some similarities between a hostel and a mountain hut, especially because both may offer shared rooms or dormitory-style beds. However, the purpose, tradition, rules and daily operation are different. A hostel is mainly a budget travel accommodation. A mountain hut is part of the mountain infrastructure and exists to support hikers, mountaineers, travellers and people who need shelter in the mountains.
What Is the Difference Between a Hostel and a Mountain Hut?
A hostel is usually designed for low-cost travel, socialising and longer city or destination stays. Many hostels offer shared rooms, private rooms, common lounges, shared kitchens, fridges, laundry facilities and a relaxed backpacker-style atmosphere.
A mountain hut is different. A mountain hut provides shelter, rest, food, drinks, basic accommodation, local information and help in mountain situations. It is usually located in or near mountain terrain, where weather, road access, water supply, waste management and safety conditions are more demanding than in towns or valleys.
Why Erjavčeva Koča Is Not a Hostel
Erjavčeva Koča is located directly on Vršič Pass, between Kranjska Gora and Trenta, in a high mountain environment. Our role is not only to provide beds. We also provide food, drinks, warmth, local information, a safe stop during bad weather and a practical base for hiking, cycling, travelling and exploring the Julian Alps.
Unlike many hostels, we do not provide a shared guest kitchen, shared refrigerators, shared freezers or a microwave for guest use. Cooking inside the hut is not allowed. Guests should use the hut restaurant or bring simple food that does not require cooking.
Mountain Huts Provide Shelter and Safety
One of the most important differences is safety. Mountain huts and mountain posts are part of the culture of safe travel in the mountains. They give visitors a place to rest, warm up, eat, sleep, ask about local conditions and get basic help if weather, darkness, tiredness or road conditions become a problem.
This is especially important in places like Vršič Pass, where weather can change quickly. Fog, snow, storms, strong wind, road closures and sudden temperature drops can make mountain travel difficult. A hut that is open all year is not just accommodation; it is also a reliable shelter in a demanding alpine environment.
Open All Year: More Than Accommodation
Erjavčeva Koča is open all year. This makes the hut useful not only in the summer hiking season, but also in autumn, winter and spring, when conditions on Vršič Pass can be more serious.
A year-round mountain hut provides an important service for hikers, travellers, road users, cyclists, mountaineers and visitors who need food, warmth, information or a safe place to wait. In winter and low season, this can be especially valuable because many seasonal mountain huts, restaurants and tourist services may be closed.
Do You Have Dormitory Beds Like a Hostel?
Yes, we may offer shared sleeping options, but this is part of the Slovenian mountain hut tradition, not a hostel concept. Shared rooms and dormitory beds are common in mountain huts because space is limited, the mountain environment is demanding and the hut must be able to accommodate different types of visitors.
Guests should expect mountain hut rules, not hostel rules. This means quiet hours, no cooking inside, no outdoor shoes in sleeping areas, respectful use of shared spaces, careful use of water and energy, and proper handling of waste.
House Rules Are Different from Hostel Rules
Mountain huts follow stricter house rules because they operate in sensitive mountain areas and often have limited water, electricity, storage and waste-management capacity. At Erjavčeva Koča, guests are expected to respect quiet hours, use designated drying areas, save water, avoid unnecessary noise and follow staff instructions.
Please read our mountain hut house rules before your stay. They explain how sleeping rooms, drying areas, food, cooking, shoes, waste, quiet hours and shared spaces work in the hut.
No Shared Kitchen, Fridge or Microwave
A common misunderstanding is that a mountain hut works like a hostel with a shared kitchen. Erjavčeva Koča does not have a guest kitchen. We also do not provide shared fridges, freezers or a microwave for guests.
Our restaurant is open daily for guests and visitors. This is the easiest and safest option if you want a warm meal, drinks, breakfast or food after a hike or a long drive over Vršič Pass.
Water, Waste and Energy Are Limited
Mountain huts must use resources carefully. Water, electricity, heating, waste storage and deliveries are more complicated in the mountains than in a town hostel. This is why guests are asked to save water, keep showers short, reduce waste and use the hut respectfully.
If you are staying with us, please also read our information about saving water while showering and why there are no public trash bins at mountain huts.
Who Should Stay at a Mountain Hut?
A mountain hut is a good choice for hikers, mountaineers, cyclists, motorcyclists, road travellers, families, nature lovers and visitors who want to stay close to the mountains. It is also a good option for people who want a practical and safe base near hiking trails around Vršič Pass.
If you expect a hostel with a shared kitchen, guest fridge, party atmosphere and self-catering facilities, Erjavčeva Koča may not be the right type of accommodation. If you want a traditional mountain hut with food, shelter, mountain atmosphere and direct access to the Julian Alps, you are in the right place.
Simple Rule
We are not a hostel. We are a year-round mountain hut on Vršič Pass, offering accommodation, food, shelter, local information and a safe base in the mountains. Please respect the hut rules, the staff, other guests and the protected alpine environment.
