This guide is prepared from the perspective of Erjavčeva koča, a mountain hut on Vršič Pass. Use it together with current weather, road conditions and responsible behaviour in Triglav National Park.
Slow Wi-Fi, Starlink internet and no phone signal at Erjavčeva koča
Is there Wi-Fi or mobile phone signal at the mountain hut?
At Erjavčeva koča mountain hut, located at Vršič Pass 1,525 meters above sea level in Triglav National Park, mobile phone signal can be weak, unstable, or completely unavailable. Internet access in a mountain hut is still a luxury, especially in a protected alpine environment surrounded by mountains, forest, rock walls, snow, and fast-changing weather.
The location of the hut is beautiful, but technically difficult. Erjavčeva koča is positioned in a kind of signal blind spot, where normal mobile coverage and traditional internet connections are difficult to provide reliably.
Over the years, we tested all major Slovenian mobile operators and internet service providers. Unfortunately, none of them could provide a stable and reliable internet connection for the hut. The location, terrain, altitude, and surrounding mountains make standard solutions unreliable.
For a long time, we never wanted to use Starlink. We love the starry sky above Vršič Pass too much, and we never liked the idea of watching moving satellites cross the night sky above the Julian Alps.
However, as the saying goes, never say never. Today, our guests can use one of the fastest available internet connections in this remote mountain location through Starlink internet.
Even with Starlink, the connection is not guaranteed at all times. Bad weather, heavy snow, strong wind, storms, ice, technical issues, or power interruptions can still affect the internet connection. In winter, when snow falls heavily, even Starlink cannot always melt the snow fast enough to keep the signal perfectly stable.
No matter the internet speed, Erjavčeva koča is still a place to enjoy nature, mountains, fresh air, hiking, skiing, cycling, the Vršič Pass road, and the peaceful atmosphere of Triglav National Park. If the Wi-Fi is slow or the phone signal disappears, you will still survive — and probably enjoy the mountains even more.
A good place to disconnect
Erjavčeva koča is a perfect place to recharge your own batteries, not only your electronic devices. Slow Wi-Fi or no phone signal can be a good reminder to look outside, enjoy the view, talk to other guests, watch the mountains, and experience the luxury of nature without constant notifications.
You can still take photos, enjoy the sunset, watch the stars, and share your memories later when the connection is better. If you post your photos, you are welcome to use #erjavcevahut.
Why internet in the mountains is different
Internet at a mountain hut is not the same as internet in a town, hotel, apartment, or office. In the valley, buildings are connected to normal infrastructure. At Vršič Pass, everything depends on weather, location, power supply, equipment, satellite visibility, and the natural shape of the surrounding mountains.
This is why we ask guests to understand that Wi-Fi and mobile signal may sometimes be slower, weaker, or temporarily unavailable. We do our best to provide a useful connection, but the mountain always has the final word.
Mobile phone signal at Vršič Pass
Mobile phone signal around Vršič Pass can vary from place to place. In some areas, your phone may show signal. In other places, the connection may disappear completely. Different mobile operators may also perform differently, but no operator can guarantee perfect coverage everywhere around the hut.
If you need internet for work, online meetings, banking, navigation, urgent communication, or travel planning, we recommend preparing important information before arriving at the hut. Download maps, reservation details, road information, weather forecasts, and emergency contacts in advance.
Final note
We provide Starlink internet because we want guests to have a better connection in a difficult mountain location. At the same time, Erjavčeva koča remains a mountain hut, not a city hotel. The real luxury is outside: the mountains, the forest, the fresh air, the night sky, and the silence of Triglav National Park.
