Why are prices in a mountain hut different from accommodation in the valley?

Erjavčeva koča is a real mountain hut located at Vršič Pass, 1,525 meters above sea level. We are open all year round and provide accommodation, food, drinks, information, and a safe mountain stop for hikers, travellers, cyclists, mountaineers, and visitors exploring the Julian Alps, Triglav National Park, Kranjska Gora, Trenta, the Soča Valley, and Bovec.

Because we are located high in the mountains, operating the hut is different from running accommodation in the valley. Supplies, heating, maintenance, staff, transport, repairs, and safety-related work are more demanding and more expensive in a mountain environment.

We are also an information and support point for visitors and for people who may need help in the mountains. For hikers, this means more peace of mind, because they can rely on Erjavčeva koča as a safe, open, and maintained mountain hut throughout the year, including outside the main summer season.

Open all year round at Vršič Pass

Erjavčeva koča is one of the mountain huts at Vršič Pass that is open throughout the year. This is important not only for guests staying overnight, but also for hikers and travellers who need a reliable stop in the mountains.

In winter, when the road to Vršič Pass is covered with snow or access is more difficult, we still need to bring food, drinks, supplies, and essential materials to the hut. When necessary, supplies are transported with snowmobiles and other winter transport methods. This allows the hut to continue operating even when mountain conditions are demanding.

Heating, maintenance, and year-round operation

We heat the rooms and the mountain hut throughout the year, including during the high summer season when nights at 1,525 meters can still be cold. Heating, electricity, water systems, safety systems, cleaning, laundry, and regular maintenance are part of the real cost of operating a mountain hut in the alpine environment.

We also regularly renovate and maintain the hut to high standards. This includes guest rooms, shared areas, technical systems, the restaurant, water systems, heating, safety equipment, and the general condition of the building. A mountain hut needs constant care, especially because it is exposed to snow, wind, cold, rain, strong sun, and heavy seasonal use.

How your visit supports the hut

When you stay at Erjavčeva koča, eat in the restaurant, or visit the hut, your contribution supports much more than one night of accommodation or one meal. Your visit helps us provide fair wages for the people who work long and demanding hours in the mountain hut.

Your visit also helps cover the cost of year-round maintenance, renovation, heating, transport, cleaning, safety, and keeping the hut open outside the high season. This is important for hikers, mountaineers, and travellers who may need a safe and reliable mountain post at Vršič Pass throughout the year.

How are prices set?

Some accommodation prices and mountain hut pricing guidelines are influenced by the rules and recommendations of the Slovenian Alpine Association. At the same time, we must also consider the real operating costs of a year-round mountain hut at Vršič Pass.

This is why our prices reflect not only the room or bed itself, but also heating, maintenance, mountain logistics, staff costs, safety, and the fact that we keep the hut open for visitors throughout the year.

We do not want to overcharge our guests. Our goal is to offer fair prices and a pleasant stay in one of the most beautiful mountain locations in Slovenia. In many cases, our prices are comparable to accommodation and restaurant prices in Kranjska Gora, Trenta, the Soča Valley, Bovec, Ljubljana, and other mountain huts in the area.
