Where can I spend the night?

If you are visiting Triglav National Park, you should plan your overnight stay before you arrive. Sleeping in the park is possible, but only in legal and designated accommodation such as mountain huts, campsites, private rooms, apartments, hotels, guesthouses and official accommodation facilities.

Triglav National Park is a protected alpine area. This means that spending the night is not the same as stopping anywhere you like. Wild camping, sleeping in a tent outside official campsites, sleeping in a car or motorhome in parking areas and overnight stays outside designated places are not allowed.

Where Can You Legally Spend the Night?

Legal overnight options in and around Triglav National Park include mountain huts in Triglav National Park, huts operated by the Triglav National Park Public Institution, campsites, private rooms and apartments, hotels, guesthouses and selected accommodation in local villages.

For hikers and mountaineers, mountain huts are often the most practical choice. They provide shelter, food, beds and local information about routes, weather and conditions. Some huts are open only in the summer season, while others may have different opening times depending on weather, snow conditions and access roads.

Mountain Huts and Erjavčeva Koča

One of the most convenient places to spend the night near Vršič Pass is Erjavčeva mountain hut, also known as Erjavčeva koča. The hut is located directly on Vršič Pass, making it a practical base for visitors exploring the Julian Alps, Triglav National Park, Kranjska Gora, Trenta and the Soča Valley.

Staying at Erjavčeva Koča is especially useful if you want to start your hike early, avoid unnecessary driving, park legally as a guest and stay close to hiking trails around Vršič Pass. It is also a safer choice than sleeping in a vehicle or trying to find an unofficial place to camp.

Can You Sleep in a Car, Motorhome or Tent?

No. Sleeping in a car, motorhome, camper van or tent outside designated areas is not allowed in Triglav National Park. Parking areas are not campsites, and a quiet parking place is not a legal overnight location.

Park rangers monitor popular locations in the park, including parking areas, road passes and trailheads. If you sleep in the wrong place, you may receive a fine. To avoid problems, use official campsites, registered accommodation or mountain huts instead.

What About Campsites?

Camping is allowed only in official campsites and specially designated camping areas. There are campsites in and around the park, especially in the direction of Trenta, Bovec, Bohinj and the Soča Valley. During July, August, weekends and public holidays, campsites can be full, so advance booking is strongly recommended.

Book Before High Season

In the summer season, beds in mountain huts and campsites near popular starting points can fill quickly. This is especially true around Vršič Pass, Trenta, Bovec, Lake Bohinj and routes toward Triglav. If your travel dates are fixed, reserve your accommodation early.

Before arrival, it is also useful to check live cameras and current conditions on Vršič Pass and plan your transport between Kranjska Gora, Vršič and Bovec. Good planning helps you avoid arriving late without a legal place to sleep.

Simple Rule for Overnight Stays

If the place is not clearly registered, marked or officially intended for overnight stays, do not sleep there. Choose a mountain hut, official campsite, private accommodation, hotel or guesthouse. This protects the national park, avoids fines and gives you a safer and more comfortable stay.
