Heating and temperature in the mountain hut
What is the temperature in the hut?
Erjavčeva koča mountain hut at Vršič Pass is heated throughout the year. Because the hut is located at 1,525 meters above sea level in the Julian Alps, nights can be cold even in summer, especially during bad weather, wind, rain, or sudden temperature changes.
The heating system in the whole hut is time-scheduled and locked. This helps us keep the temperature comfortable, safe, and energy-efficient for all guests.
A heating system was installed on the dormitory floor in 2023 for the first time in the hut’s history. This was an important improvement for overnight guests and part of our ongoing renovation and modernisation of the mountain hut.
The average temperature in the sleeping area is usually between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius. For a mountain hut, this is already a very comfortable temperature. If you are too warm or too cold, please inform the hut staff. The heating can be adjusted or turned off when possible.
Please be responsible with heating
Planinske koče are not hotels in the valley. A mountain hut is a shelter, a safe resting point, and a place where hikers, mountaineers, travellers, and guests can warm up, sleep, eat, and recover. Heating a mountain hut at Vršič Pass requires energy, maintenance, planning, and responsible use.
Please do not open windows for a long time while the heating is on. If the room is too warm, tell the staff instead. If the room is too cold, also tell the staff. This helps us keep the hut comfortable without wasting unnecessary energy.
Prices for overnight stays, food, and drinks also depend on real operating costs. The mountain hut is heated throughout the year, including summer, because nights in the mountains can still be cold.
Heating in mountain huts and winter rooms
In many traditional mountain huts, heating was historically much more limited than guests expect today. Some huts had only a common room with a stove, while sleeping rooms remained cold. In some winter rooms in the Alps, there was no regular heating at all, or only very basic emergency shelter for mountaineers outside the main season.
Erjavčeva koča does not have a separate winter room, but it is useful to understand this mountain-hut tradition. A winter room was never meant to be hotel-style accommodation. It was a basic shelter for safety, protection, and survival when the main hut was closed.
Because Erjavčeva koča is open all year round, we provide a much higher level of comfort than a traditional unheated winter room. Guests can expect a heated hut, warm sleeping areas, food, drinks, staff, and support even outside the main summer season.
Why heating matters at Vršič Pass
Vršič Pass is a mountain location with fast-changing weather. Temperatures can drop quickly, and wind, snow, rain, fog, or storms can make conditions feel colder than expected. Heating is important not only for comfort, but also for drying rooms, protecting the building, preserving the water system, and keeping the hut safe and usable throughout the year.
By staying at Erjavčeva koča, eating in the restaurant, or visiting the hut, you help cover the cost of year-round heating, maintenance, staff, renovation, and safe operation of a mountain hut in Triglav National Park.
Final note
We do our best to keep the hut warm, comfortable, and welcoming. At the same time, we kindly ask guests to understand that heating in a mountain hut is not unlimited. Please be responsible, communicate with the staff, and help us use energy wisely.
A warm room in a mountain hut is not something to take for granted. It is part of the shared comfort that all guests help protect.
