What should I know before visiting Vršič Pass in winter?

Erjavčeva koča is a mountain hut located at Vršič Pass, 1,525 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park. Winter at Vršič can be beautiful, peaceful, and unforgettable, but it can also be serious, demanding, and dangerous.

Snow conditions at Vršič Pass can change very quickly. Heavy snowfall, wind, ice, low visibility, snowdrifts, freezing temperatures, and avalanche danger can affect the road, the trails, parking areas, and access to the hut.

In winter, the road to Vršič Pass can be closed for a day or two, or longer if necessary, because of snow, ice, road maintenance, dangerous conditions, or avalanche risk. If the road is closed, access by car may not be possible, and visitors may need to walk from the valley, depending on weather, snow conditions, route safety, and personal ability.

The walk through Triglav National Park can be beautiful, but in winter it must never be underestimated. A summer walk that may take 1.5 to 3.5 hours can become much more demanding in snow, ice, wind, or poor visibility.

Respect winter mountains

Winter mountains deserve respect and a healthy sense of awe. Nature at Vršič Pass is powerful. Snow, avalanches, wind, ice, darkness, and sudden weather changes can quickly turn a simple plan into a serious situation.

Please do not underestimate the mountains. Before travelling to Vršič in winter, check the weather forecast, avalanche conditions, road information, daylight hours, your equipment, and your own physical ability. If you are not experienced in winter mountain conditions, choose a safer plan or ask for advice before starting your trip.

Proper winter footwear, warm clothing, gloves, a hat, a headlamp, water, food, and suitable winter equipment are essential. If you plan to hike beyond the hut in winter, you must also understand the risks of avalanches and changing snow conditions.

Erjavčeva koča is open all year round

Erjavčeva koča is open all year round and serves as a safe mountain post at Vršič Pass. We are here not only for overnight guests and daily visitors, but also as a reliable shelter and information point for people travelling through this part of the mountains.

We are also a point where people can ask for help in case of accidents, difficult conditions, exhaustion, injury, or unexpected problems in the mountains. The hut is open throughout the year so that hikers, travellers, mountaineers, skiers, and visitors can rely on a safe and warm place at Vršič Pass.

There is also a helipad near the hut, which can be important in emergency situations and mountain rescue operations when conditions allow safe use.

Snowmobile transport in winter

When the road is covered with snow or access is difficult, we sometimes transport food, supplies, and equipment with snowmobiles. In some cases, and by prior arrangement, snowmobile transport of luggage or equipment may also be possible.

This depends on snow conditions, weather, safety, staff availability, and current access to the hut. Snowmobile transport is never automatic and must always be arranged in advance.

Google Maps and road closure information

Please note that Google Maps does not always show the real situation on the Vršič road correctly. Sometimes Google Maps may show that the road is closed even when it is open, or it may not show the latest local situation immediately.

For winter travel to Vršič Pass, do not rely only on Google Maps. Check official road information, weather forecasts, local updates, and contact the hut if you are unsure about access, road conditions, or whether the road is currently passable.

Walking to the hut in winter

If the road is closed and you decide to walk to Erjavčeva koča, you must be properly prepared. The route may be covered with snow, icy, exposed to wind, or affected by avalanche danger. Conditions can be very different from day to day.

Walking to the hut in winter can be a wonderful experience, but only if it is done responsibly. Please respect your limits, check conditions before leaving, and remember that turning back is always better than taking unnecessary risks.
