Where should I park when visiting Vršič Pass?

If you are visiting Vršič Pass, Erjavčeva koča mountain hut, the Julian Alps, or Triglav National Park, please plan your parking before arrival. Vršič Pass is one of the most visited mountain locations in Slovenia, and parking can be limited during the main season, weekends, holidays, and good weather.

Whenever possible, park your vehicle in an official public parking area and use public transport, shuttle services, walking routes, or other sustainable transport options. Park & Ride options, lower-priced parking areas near train and bus stations, and seasonal public transport can help reduce traffic pressure on the mountain pass.

Official parking areas and public transport routes are available in several municipalities of the Julian Alps. During the main season, public transport can be a good alternative to driving all the way to the top of Vršič Pass.

Parking in front of Erjavčeva koča

There is a parking area in front of Erjavčeva koča mountain hut, but please note that this parking area is not managed by Erjavčeva koča. The hut does not control parking prices, payment systems, parking rules, parking barriers, parking meters, camera control, or possible technical problems with the parking system.

If you have questions about payment, parking barriers, parking control, prices, fines, technical issues, or the parking meter, please contact the parking operator directly. The hut staff cannot solve official parking payment or control issues.

You can check live cameras before arrival to see the current situation around Vršič Pass and the area near Erjavčeva koča. Live cameras can be useful, but they cannot guarantee that a parking space will still be available when you arrive.

Do not rely only on road signs or Google Maps

Road signs, electronic signs, navigation apps, and Google Maps can sometimes be confusing around Vršič Pass. For example, a sign showing limited access or “transit only” may refer to parking occupancy near the top of the pass, not necessarily to whether Erjavčeva koča is open or reachable.

Google Maps can also sometimes show outdated or incomplete road information, especially during winter, roadworks, traffic changes, closures, or seasonal restrictions. Before travelling to Vršič Pass, check current road conditions, weather, live cameras, and local information.

Bus schedule and public transport to Vršič

The bus to Vršič Pass usually operates during the main tourist season. The regularly updated seasonal bus schedule is always available on our contact page.

Please check the current bus schedule before your visit, because timetables can change every year and may depend on season, road conditions, local transport organisation, and public holidays.

If the bus is not operating, you can still reach Erjavčeva koča by taxi, private transfer, walking from the valley, or sometimes by arranging transport in advance. In winter, when the road is covered with snow or closed, transport of luggage or equipment by snowmobile may be possible by prior arrangement, depending on conditions and safety.

Parking in the valley and walking to the hut

If parking near the pass is full, or if you want to reduce traffic pressure in Triglav National Park, you can park in the valley and visit Erjavčeva koča on foot. This can be a good option for hikers, guests who enjoy walking, and visitors who want a quieter mountain experience.

Before choosing this option, check the weather forecast, walking distance, daylight, trail conditions, road conditions, and your physical ability. In winter, walking to the hut can be much more demanding because of snow, ice, wind, avalanche danger, and low temperatures.

Parking and nature protection

Vršič Pass is located in a sensitive alpine environment. Responsible parking helps protect Triglav National Park, reduces traffic pressure, keeps roads safer, and makes the experience better for hikers, cyclists, motorcyclists, drivers, guests, and local services.

Please park only in official parking areas, do not block roads, emergency access, private property, driveways, turning areas, or access routes used by staff, suppliers, mountain rescue, and winter services.
