Juliana garden, Slovenia

Alpine Botanical Garden Juliana, also known as Alpinum Juliana, is one of the most special natural and cultural attractions in the Trenta Valley and Triglav National Park. Located at about 800 metres above sea level along the road between Bovec, Trenta and Vršič Pass, it is the oldest alpine botanical garden in a natural environment in Slovenia. Founded in 1926 by Albert Bois de Chesne with the advice of the famous mountaineer and writer Julius Kugy, Juliana preserves the beauty and diversity of alpine flora in one concentrated place. Its position in the Julian Alps gives visitors a rare opportunity to see mountain plants, karst species, sub-Mediterranean influences and protected flowers that would otherwise require many separate hikes through different alpine habitats.

Juliana botanic garden, Slovenia

The importance of Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden goes beyond its beauty, as it represents almost a century of botanical knowledge, nature protection and education in the Slovenian mountains. The garden covers a small but rich area of around 2,570 square metres and contains hundreds of plant species, including rare and protected alpine flowers, endemic plants and species from the Julian Alps and nearby mountain regions. It is especially beautiful from May to early summer, when many alpine flowers are in bloom, but the garden changes throughout the season and offers a different experience from spring to autumn. For travellers exploring Trenta, the Soča Valley, Vršič Pass and the Julian Alps, Juliana is a peaceful and meaningful stop that connects mountain nature, history, science and conservation. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, the Alpine Botanical Garden Juliana can be included in a scenic day trip through Trenta, the source of the Soča River and some of the most beautiful protected landscapes of Triglav National Park.
