Martuljek waterfalls

Martuljek waterfalls, Slovenia

Martuljek Waterfalls, also known as Martuljški slapovi, are among the most beautiful natural attractions near Kranjska Gora and one of the hidden highlights of the Julian Alps. Located below the mighty Špik mountain in the wild Martuljek mountain group, the waterfalls reveal a dramatic landscape of forests, limestone cliffs, narrow gorges, rushing water and peaceful alpine views. The area has long been valued for its natural importance; it was declared a landscape park in 1949 and later became part of Triglav National Park in 1981. For visitors who want to experience hiking, photography and authentic alpine nature away from the busiest tourist routes, the Martuljek Waterfalls offer a perfect combination of beauty, history and mountain atmosphere.

Martuljek

The two main waterfalls each have their own character: the Upper Martuljek Waterfall is especially spectacular, descending in three stages over a high rock wall of about 110 metres, while the Lower Martuljek Waterfall falls into the narrow Martuljek Gorge, a limestone canyon shaped by water and time. Late spring is one of the best times to visit, when melting snow makes the waterfalls especially powerful and full of life. The lower waterfall is more accessible, while the approach close to the upper waterfall is more demanding and suitable only for well-equipped hikers with proper footwear and mountain awareness. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, Martuljek Waterfalls can be included in a scenic day trip through Kranjska Gora, Gozd Martuljek, Lake Jasna and the most beautiful natural corners of Slovenia’s Julian Alps.
