The importance of Dr. Julius Kugy lies in his deep connection with the Julian Alps, local mountain guides and the early exploration of Slovenia’s high mountains. With the help of Trenta guides, Kugy was the first to climb many peaks in the Julian Alps, often by new routes, and through his books he helped preserve the spirit, stories and beauty of the alpine world for future generations. One of the most interesting details of his life was his search for the mysterious flower Scabiosa trenta, which later proved to be a botanical myth, but became part of the romantic history of Trenta and the Julian Alps. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, the Julius Kugy Monument can be included in a scenic day trip through Trenta, the source of the Soča River, the Alpine Botanical Garden Juliana and the most beautiful cultural and natural sights of Triglav National Park.
