Kot Valley, known in Slovenian as Dolina Kot, is one of the three famous glacial valleys near Mojstrana, together with Vrata and Krma, and lies entirely within Triglav National Park. Hidden in the northern part of the Julian Alps, Kot is quieter and less visited than Vrata, yet it offers a powerful alpine atmosphere with forests, steep mountain slopes, peaceful meadows and views toward the high peaks around Triglav and Rjavina. Its Slovenian name means “corner”, which perfectly describes the valley’s enclosed and intimate character. For hikers, photographers and nature lovers, Kot Valley is a beautiful place to experience the wild but calm side of Slovenia’s mountains, away from the busiest tourist routes.

Travel guide

kot valley, slovenia

The importance of Kot Valley is closely connected with Slovenian mountaineering tradition, as it provides one of the shorter and relatively direct approaches toward the high mountain world below Mount Triglav. From the end of the valley, routes continue toward Stanič mountain hut and the surrounding peaks, making Kot a meaningful starting point for experienced hikers planning longer alpine tours. The valley is also valued for its natural silence, forest landscape and position between the dramatic neighbouring valleys of Vrata and Krma. Although access by forest road from Mojstrana is relatively simple, the higher routes above Kot require proper preparation, good weather, suitable equipment and respect for mountain conditions. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, Kot Valley can be included in a scenic alpine journey through Kranjska Gora, Mojstrana, Vrata, Krma and the most important valleys below Triglav.
