Zadnjica valley

Zadnjica valley, Slovenia

Zadnjica Valley, known in Slovenian as Dolina Zadnjica, is one of the most beautiful and authentic glacial valleys in the upper Soča Valley, located near Trenta in the heart of Triglav National Park. The valley branches off from the Soča Valley near the village of Na Logu and reaches deep into the high mountain world of the Julian Alps, below the slopes of Kanjavec, Triglav, Vršac, Zadnjiški Ozebnik and the Kriški podi area. Its wide valley floor, forests, meadows, mountain streams, steep rock walls and quiet atmosphere make it a perfect destination for hikers, photographers and visitors who want to experience the wilder and less crowded side of Slovenia’s alpine landscape. Because of its position between Trenta and the central Triglav mountains, Zadnjica is not only scenic but also one of the most important natural gateways into the high Julian Alps.

Travel guide

Zadnjica valley

The importance of Zadnjica Valley is closely connected with Slovenian mountaineering, as it is a classic starting point for demanding routes toward Mount Triglav via Dolič, Kanjavec, Prehodavci, Kriški podi, Razor, Stenar and other high mountain destinations. The valley is also known for its strong alpine character: in spring, waterfalls and avalanches can thunder down from the surrounding walls, while in summer and autumn the valley offers peaceful access to some of the most dramatic hiking routes in Triglav National Park. Wildlife, alpine flowers, old mule tracks and views toward the high limestone peaks add to its special atmosphere. These routes require proper preparation, suitable equipment, stable weather and respect for mountain conditions, especially when continuing beyond the valley into exposed alpine terrain. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, Zadnjica Valley can be included in a scenic day trip through Trenta, the source of the Soča River, Mlinarica Gorge, the Alpine Botanical Garden Juliana and the most beautiful natural sights of the upper Soča Valley.
