Krn Lake
Krn Lake

Lake Krn, also known as Krnsko jezero, is the largest high-mountain lake in Slovenia and one of the most remarkable natural attractions in Triglav National Park. Lying at around 1,391 metres above sea level beneath the mighty Mount Krn, this glacial lake is surrounded by quiet alpine landscapes, limestone peaks and open mountain meadows. Its clear water, peaceful atmosphere and remote location make it a perfect destination for hikers, photographers and nature lovers exploring the Julian Alps and the upper Soča Valley. Because the lake can only be reached on foot, every visit feels like a true mountain journey and offers a deeper connection with Slovenia’s protected alpine nature.

Krn Lake

The area around Krnsko jezero is important not only for its natural beauty but also for its history and fragile mountain environment. During the First World War, the wider Krn area witnessed events of the Isonzo Front, and traces of trenches, caverns and military remains still remind visitors of the difficult history of these mountains. Today, Lake Krn is valued as a peaceful natural sanctuary, with sensitive alpine plants, quiet walking routes and views toward Mount Krn, Lemež and the surrounding Julian Alps. Swimming and fishing are not appropriate because of the delicate lake ecosystem, so visitors are encouraged to enjoy the lake respectfully, stay on marked paths and protect this special high-mountain landscape. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, Lake Krn can be included in a longer scenic journey through Trenta, Lepena, the Soča Valley and the historic mountain world of western Slovenia.
