Russian road, Slovenia

The Russian Road on Vršič Pass, known in Slovenian as Ruska cesta, is one of the most scenic and historically important mountain roads in the Julian Alps. Connecting Kranjska Gora with Trenta and the Soča Valley, the road crosses Vršič Pass, the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, and offers dramatic views of Prisank, Mojstrovka, the surrounding peaks and the alpine landscape of Triglav National Park. Its stone-paved hairpin turns, steep slopes and changing mountain weather make it one of the most memorable road journeys in Slovenia. Along the way, visitors can discover famous sights such as Lake Jasna, the Russian Chapel, Ajdovska deklica, Prisank Window and several panoramic viewpoints that make the Vršič road a must-see route for photographers, hikers and travellers exploring northwestern Slovenia.

The curves of Russian road in winter from the drone

The history of Ruska cesta is deeply connected with the First World War and the Isonzo Front. The Austro-Hungarian military needed a reliable supply road over Vršič, and thousands of Russian prisoners of war were forced to build and maintain the road in extremely difficult alpine conditions. In 1916, a deadly avalanche struck the work area, and the nearby Russian Chapel, dedicated to Saint Vladimir, remains a moving memorial to the prisoners who suffered and died during the construction. Today, the Russian Road is not only a transport link between Kranjska Gora, Vršič, Trenta and the Soča Valley, but also a place of remembrance, mountain culture and natural beauty. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, visitors are perfectly placed to experience the road’s history, viewpoints, hiking trails and the authentic alpine atmosphere of Slovenia’s highest mountain pass.
