The history of Podkoren is closely connected with old trade routes, borderland life and the road over Korensko sedlo, which for centuries linked Carniola with Carinthia and the wider Central European region. From the 15th century onward, the village served as an important toll station on this steep mountain route, while its church of St. Andrew and traditional houses preserve the atmosphere of an old alpine settlement. Podkoren is also famous for winter sports, as the slopes above the village on Vitranac host important alpine skiing competitions, including World Cup races. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, Podkoren can be included in a scenic day trip through Kranjska Gora, Zelenci, Planica, Rateče and the most beautiful villages and natural sights of the Julian Alps.
