Rateče, Slovenia
Rateče is a charming alpine village near Kranjska Gora, located in the far northwestern part of Slovenia close to the Italian border and the dramatic landscapes of the Julian Alps. The village is known for its peaceful meadows, traditional alpine character, long winters and sunny mountain days, making it an excellent destination for visitors who want to experience authentic village life near Planica, Zelenci and Tamar Valley. Because of its cold climate, Rateče was famously described by writer Josip Lavtižar as the “Carniolan Siberia”, a nickname that reflects its winter identity and close connection with Nordic sports, snow-covered landscapes and mountain tradition.
