Stol mountain, Slovenia

Mount Stol, also known as Veliki Stol or Hochstuhl, is the highest peak of the Karawanks mountain range, rising to 2,236 metres on the border between Slovenia and Austria. Its long grassy slopes, wide ridge and open summit views make it one of the most recognisable mountains in northern Slovenia. From Stol, hikers can enjoy panoramic views toward the Julian Alps, Lake Bled, the Ljubljana Basin, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Austrian side of Carinthia. Because of its position on the natural border between Slovenia and Austria, Stol is not only a beautiful hiking destination but also an important geographical landmark in the alpine landscape of Central Europe.

Stol mount in Slovenia

The history of Mount Stol is closely connected with early mountaineering in Slovenia, with the first recorded ascent dating back to 1794. The area is also known for Prešeren Lodge at Stol, located below Mali Stol and named after Slovenia’s national poet France Prešeren, adding cultural meaning to the mountain experience. Stol is popular among hikers because it offers a rewarding high-mountain feeling without the sharp limestone character of many Julian Alps peaks, although proper equipment, good weather and mountain experience are still important. Visitors staying at Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass can combine Stol with Kranjska Gora, Lake Jasna, the Julian Alps and other scenic mountain routes, creating a varied alpine journey through Slovenia’s most beautiful mountain regions.
