Škrlatica
Škrlatica

Škrlatica mountain, Slovenia

Škrlatica is one of the most majestic mountains in the Julian Alps and the second-highest peak in Slovenia after Mount Triglav. Rising to 2,740 metres, it is often called the Queen of the Julian Alps because of its elegant shape, steep rock walls and powerful presence above the alpine valleys of Vrata and Krnica. Although it is slightly lower than Triglav, Škrlatica feels wild, remote and serious, offering a true high-mountain atmosphere for experienced hikers and mountaineers. Its dramatic limestone walls, changing light and wide views make it one of the most impressive mountains for photography, alpine exploration and discovering the more demanding side of Slovenia’s mountain world.

Travel guide

Škrlatica

The queen of Slovenian mountains

The history of Škrlatica is closely connected with the golden age of mountaineering in the Julian Alps. The first recorded ascent was made in 1880 by Julius Kugy, together with the Trenta guides Andrej Komac and Matija Kravanja, marking an important moment in the exploration of Slovenia’s high mountains. Today, Škrlatica remains a demanding alpine objective, with long approaches, exposed terrain and secured sections that require proper equipment, stable weather and real mountain experience. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, visitors can admire Škrlatica as part of the wider Julian Alps landscape and combine the area with nearby highlights such as Krnica Valley, Prisank, Razor, Vršič Pass and Triglav National Park.
