tarvisio cave del predil italy
tarvisio cave del predil italy

Cave del Predil, also known historically as Raibl, is a fascinating alpine village near Tarvisio in Friuli Venezia Giulia, close to the Slovenian border, Predil Pass and Lake Predil. Surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Julian Alps, Mangart and the border mountains between Italy and Slovenia, the village is best known for its mining heritage and its unique position between the Soča Valley, Tarvisio and the old alpine routes toward Bovec and Log pod Mangartom. Unlike many purely scenic mountain stops, Cave del Predil combines natural beauty with industrial history, making it an interesting destination for travellers who want to explore both the landscape and the human stories that shaped this part of the Alps.

cave del predil lake, italy

The history of Cave del Predil is closely connected with the former Raibl Mine, an important lead and zinc mining complex that shaped the life, economy and identity of the village for centuries until its final closure in 1991. Today, visitors can learn about this heritage at the Raibl Mine, the Museum of Mining Tradition and the “Alpi Giulie” Military History Museum, which present the work of miners, local community life and the military history of this border region. Cave del Predil is also connected with the Štoln tunnel, a long underground passage historically linked with Log pod Mangartom on the Slovenian side. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, Cave del Predil can be included in a scenic cross-border day trip through Trenta, Bovec, Log pod Mangartom, Predil Pass, Lake Predil and some of the most meaningful natural and historical sights of the Julian Alps.
