Mlinarica, Slovenia

Mlinarica Waterfall and Mlinarica Gorge are among the most dramatic natural sights in the upper Soča Valley, close to Trenta and the road between Vršič Pass and Bovec. The Mlinarica stream rises below the high mountains of Prisank and Razor before carving a deep, narrow gorge on its way toward the Soča River. In its lower section, the gorge becomes an extraordinary limestone corridor, with rock walls reaching up to around 70–100 metres in depth and narrowing to only about one metre in places. This combination of rushing water, dark rock, waterfalls, pools and natural stone bridges makes Mlinarica one of the most impressive but also one of the most serious hidden natural attractions in Triglav National Park.

Travel guide

mlinarica gorge and waterfall, Slovenia

Unlike more accessible waterfalls in Slovenia, Mlinarica Gorge is best admired with caution, as the inner gorge is difficult, dangerous and not suitable for casual visitors. One of the most remarkable visible features is the waterfall near the entrance to the troughs, where the water drops through the narrow rocky passage before joining the Soča River only a short distance downstream. Because of rockfall danger and the technical character of the gorge, visitors should respect local signs, stay only in permitted areas and never enter the inner canyon without proper knowledge and equipment. Its wild character, geological power and location near Trenta, the source of the Soča River, the Alpine Botanical Garden Juliana and Vršič Pass make Mlinarica a fascinating stop for nature lovers, photographers and travellers exploring the quieter side of the Julian Alps. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, Mlinarica can be included in a scenic day trip through Trenta and the upper Soča Valley.
