Russian chapel at Vršič pass, Slovenia

The Russian Chapel on Vršič Pass, also known as Ruska kapelica, is one of the most important historical and cultural landmarks in the Julian Alps. It stands on the Russian Road between Kranjska Gora and Vršič Pass, in memory of the Russian prisoners of war who were forced to build the military road over Slovenia’s highest mountain pass during the First World War. The road was built to supply the Isonzo Front with food, ammunition and military material, making Vršič an important strategic route between the Sava Valley and the Soča Valley. Today, the small wooden Orthodox chapel is a quiet and moving reminder of suffering, endurance and the human cost of war in the mountains.

Russian Chapel on the Vršič Pass

The chapel was built in 1916 and dedicated to Saint Vladimir, after a tragic avalanche buried prisoners and guards working on the Vršič road. Its Russian-style wooden architecture, small towers and peaceful forest setting make it one of the most recognisable memorial sites near Kranjska Gora. The Russian Chapel is not only a historical monument but also a symbol of remembrance, respect and peace, visited by travellers, hikers and history lovers exploring Vršič Pass, Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps. From Erjavčeva mountain hut, the Russian Chapel can be included in a scenic journey along the Vršič road, together with Lake Jasna, Prisank, Ajdovska deklica, the Soča Valley and some of the most meaningful sights in northwestern Slovenia.
