Velika Ponca, also known as Velika Martuljška Ponca, is one of the most impressive and wild peaks in the Julian Alps. Rising to about 2,602 metres in the Martuljek mountain group, it stands between Mala Martuljška Ponca and Oltar, forming part of the dramatic high mountain skyline above Gozd Martuljek and the Upper Sava Valley. Unlike the better-known peaks above Vršič Pass or Planica, Velika Ponca has a more remote and serious character, with steep limestone walls, exposed terrain and a strong sense of untouched alpine wilderness. For mountain photographers and experienced alpinists, it represents one of the more powerful and less commercial faces of Slovenia’s high mountains.
