Ajdovska deklica, Vršič, Slovenia

Ajdovska deklica, also known as the Heathen Maiden, is one of the most famous natural landmarks on Vršič Pass and one of the most recognisable legends of the Julian Alps. The stone face appears in the northern wall of Prisank, also called Prisojnik, where natural rock formations create the shape of a mysterious woman looking toward the mountain world above Kranjska Gora and Trenta. Together with the Russian Chapel, Prisank Window, Mala Mojstrovka and the views from Vršič, Ajdovska deklica is one of the most meaningful sights along Slovenia’s highest mountain pass. It is especially interesting for photographers, hikers and travellers who enjoy places where nature, folklore and alpine scenery meet.

The stone face of Heathen Maiden

According to the legend, Ajdovska deklica was a kind-hearted giantess who lived on the slopes of Prisank and helped mountaineers and travellers find their way through snowstorms across Vršič Pass into the Trenta Valley. As a fate-telling figure, she also foretold the destiny of a newborn child who would one day become a hunter and shoot Zlatorog, the golden-horned chamois of Slovenian mountain folklore. Because of this prophecy, other heathen women punished her and turned her into stone, leaving her face forever visible in the cliffs of Prisank. Today, Ajdovska deklica is not only a natural rock formation but also a powerful symbol of Slovenian mountain mythology, local storytelling and the cultural identity of the Julian Alps. From Erjavčeva mountain hut on Vršič Pass, visitors can admire this legendary face, explore nearby viewpoints and connect the experience with hiking, photography, Triglav National Park and the scenic road between Kranjska Gora and the Soča Valley.
